Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could provide information on this Luciano Paletti frame I recently picked up. It has been repainted, of course. I have found very little information about Paletti's bikes online, and this frame has a few details that I haven't seen on any others that I have found: pump nipple and two sets of bottle lugs. It also has the attached front derailleur mount that most seem to lack. It was originally originally equipped with campy super record components.
Any info would be super appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe

Yeah, the frame appears to be made very well and feels great on the road (I put 80 on it the day after I bought it). I made an attempt to contact Paletti in my horrible Italian but haven't heard back from them yet. I'd love to find a set of decals.
Georgio (see address below) has had them in the past, he might
have more.

Giorgio seemed to think it was a 70s model, which explains why I haven't seen one similar. All the Paletti photos I've found online have been mid-80s.

with these braze-ons (2 sets of WB bosses, pump peg, FD tab, cable tunnels and stop, shifter bosses) I'd say it's very likely an '80s model unless all that was added when re-sprayed. Was the rear spacing 126?
quietglow
05-30-08, 07:15 PM
No, I'd say it was more than that. That's a standard 120mm track hub and it pulled the chain stays in more than 6mm. 130 maybe?
The braze-ons all look very original -- the bottle bosses and the pump peg both have the convex diamond bases that appear elsewhere on the bike.
I am beginning to think you're right, though. The PO seemed to think that the Super Record crank and bottom bracket were original equipment on the bike. They have the square with an "11" which indicates a manufacture date in 1985, from what I can tell.

l have 2 paletti's a 1985 Super Prestige SLX fully panto Super Record and recently purchased a carbon model with Chorus.l restored my SLX and got Michele Paletti to send decals and a bike catalog. He sent me 4 sets of decals.l have a spare set with white lettering if interested.Your bike looks to be an early eightys model because of the engravings on forks and rear stays pretty similar to mine.
Regards John.
I have a Paletti Profil Sistem PMZ that is red, yellow, chrome and black. I think it's from the 80's but I have not been able to find any information on it. If anyone knows anything about this model, please reply.
Thanks.

Hello to all, - I am new on this great forum, and after the introduction page (the " hello from Luxembourg" thread) I jump to here as I bought a used but fine classic Paletti road bike two weeks ago. I love it ( except the colour - I'll repaint it professionnally in winter) . I really don't know what's original ( the frame certainly does) on it or not. I think it must be a bike from the late eighties or the early ninetees. I'll try to post a pic if I find out how to do.
Greetings from Luxembourg.

If You give me a little time, I think I can help You with the decals. As I'm rebuilding entirely my Paletti bike
( the frame looks very similar to yours) I took pics from the decals that were on it and they are being reprinted to put on the bike when the remake of the paint work will be finished. If it is a success, I'll post pics of the new (old:-)) decals so You do have the possibility to do the same thing I did: give the photos to a decal maker and he'll do that.
If You like the idea, give me a sign.
As an idea, here's Luciano Paletti's signature on my bike:

Paletti was one of the first to use braze-on front derailleurs in the 70's, prior to Campagnolo making them as a standard product. Jointly with Marastoni, he came out with bikes having quite a slick front derailleur not requiring any band. On one side the mount reads Marastoni and on the other it reads Paletti. Marastoni had been making braze-on front derailleurs since the early 70's. The double water bottle mounts do however point to the 80's or a modified frame.

Here two other pics, showing how one can reproduce decals quite close to the original ones.
Can be very interesting with decals that don't exist anymore. What You have to do is take pics from the original stickers of Your bike BEFORE You sand off the original coulour . Then find a place where they make these things ( a "lettering studio", or how do You call this in English:-). The people have to be conscious at work, although.
Afterwords, when two layers of new colour are on the bike frame, and the colour has been "burned in" ( what in Italy they don't always do, which is disappointing, especially when it is a frame of value, like... well, I won't say names, - the "remake" stickers must be put on.
Then, the whole bike should get a layer of clear varnish to protect all - the new colour AND the stickers.
For me this was a first time experience, ( and it's not over yet), but I like the result. As my Paletti bike is not a "high level collectable", it seemed interesting to try to do that - all I want is a low budget nice classic road bike, - and that's what it's gonna be. As soon as I'll have finished the rebuilding, I'll send some more pics.

Here are my 2 paletti's,I've finally worked out how to post the photos.I bought my Super Prestige in 1985 when I went racing in Italy.I restored the paintwork as it had a crack in the right chain stay.I found out later many Paletti's had this as a common problem as they were widely available in Melbourne through a friend of Luciano.Mine is all as original as can be,the brake levers supplied with the bike never worked properly they were first generation internal cable routing I still have them they are pantographed as well.I replaced them with apair of cobaltos from Campoldy.I bought my latest edition two years ago after being hit by a car on my Old Colnago Mexico. It's a beautiful ride. It's equipped with a full Chorus ensemble Campag wheels and Ritchey finishing kit.I've had many hours of pleasure riding my machines and continue to do so.

Hello to all,
Beautiful bike. My bike certainly is a less sophisticated one than Yours, - probably younger aswell, for the frame I'm not sure, but it was equipped with Shimano 105 group ( older model) and my "goal" is to make a beautiful low budget ( or not-too-expensive) every-day road bike out of it. Yet respecting some rules of taste and respect.
With a bike that really has a historical background, I would have thought twice before repainting it in red ( actually, the pics may seem orange, but it's red, Ferrari red :).
Anyway it's nice and helpful to look at Your beautiful pics. There's very little information available about Paletti bikes, so I am thanksful for anything that can help me in my restoration.
Greets to all

jeez! the blue one is stunning in every way. funky colorsheme engravings gruppo! Stunning. thx
@ de paletti,
Yes, I have noticed it is very difficult to find any information about Paletti bikes. I am not an avid competition rider; I just ride for fun, recreation and to save gas. But I still want to know more about these beautiful bikes. Are they rare? I actually found mine at a Goodwill store and they sold it to me for $10!!!
I am not sure if all the parts are original or what year it is, but I assume from the Columbus decal that it is from the early to mid 80's?
Does anyone have information about the founding and history of Luciano Paletti and his career?

Hi all ,
If anyone is after a set of transfers I have a couple of sets that Michele sent to me when I purchased the carbon model. They are the same as the ones on my blue SLX model but they have white lettering.I also bought 2 frames in 1985, one was made from Columbus Air tubing shaped like a tear drop ,the only problem it had was the way the seat was clamped it kept falling down the other was shaped like Francesco Moser's hour record time trial bike.It was made from oria tubing,it's a shame that I don't still have them the only remnant's I have is a 3ttt stem and the columbus air seat post it's fully panto.A coulple of ex-olympians called the Sansonetti's who raced for Australia were the people who brought Paletti's to Melbourne,I think they raced in Paletti's team in Modena.I had Michele ask me if I if I still had contact with them as he had lost contact .A friend of mine works with one of the brothers who renewed his contact with him as he moved his shop to bigger premises in mid 90's.From memory I paid about $3000 for my SLX in !985 and the frames were about $1500.

Hi Joe,
I have an early 80's Paletti that I am going to be listing on Ebay this weekend. It is a 60cm frame. Do you want some photos to help you have more reproduced? I have an expert friend in Australia named Greg Softley (ebay: gts753) that does excellent work. He has reproduced many for me and he is a graphical design artist by day trade and at night and around his normal job he does many graphics for sale on Ebay: his Ebay store, which you can google is cyclomondo. If you can send me an email, I can get you some photos.

Hello to all around here,
I'm going on searching for information on the Paletti Bikes - really difficult. As I told You, I'll put some pics as soon as my bike will be finished ( probably next week). Finished is maybe not the right word, though, as maybe later on I'll look for some ( still well working but from the right period) Campy stuff that might fit ...
About Luciano Paletti, there is little on the Web. About the bikes, I come more and more to the result that even if they do not have the same "publicity-glamorous" fame than Colnagos, Bianchis, Cellinis or Gios - they nethertheless are very fine and well done bikes. So if You own one, don't just treat it without respect. :thumb:

Thank You very much for the compliments.
I did contact johnroger for decals, I hope he received my mails... if not it would be nice to get in touch somehow. Computers are complicated for me as I am more a "senior" cyclist, in spite of my "junior" as a member here :-))
Also, I made a little search on different web forums and found out several things I did not know before...
The Paletti frame is almost certainly from the 80ties. There was a bike frame made at that period, the bike ( Paletti Sport Linea) was sold with Ofmega parts in 1988. I thought my frame was that frame, as it looks quite similar, but it's not exactly. The tubing quality seems the same( Oria T.T.09 ??) but the chrome parts on the back of my frame are similar to the Meteor model of that period. It existed in red aswell - astonishing fact as most italian bikes were more multi-coloured back in these days...

Here's another picture of the bike as it is now. I don't regret having done this. But I am not sure there won't be some more changes in the future. A Campy group would be grat - if my budget allows it some day and if a group that works and is period-correct can be found.

I love the Forum. I'm not posting that often, but I found a lot of information. In my head, I'm playing with the idea of building up a nice Randonneur - a "travel-Road bike ( NOT from the Paletti - that one is meant to be and remain as it is:-).
If my idea comes to reality, I'll let You know.

Hello to all,
Some pics with the decals John had the great kindness to sent as I put them on the bike.
I did it in a kind of unorthodox way - yet I think they look fine this way. (I'll also put some clear varnish on them next week to protect them.)
John's bike is a high level edition, so things are different, anyway. His bike just has to be as original as possible. My Paletti is just meant to be an as low-cost as possible rebuilt, a bike to be ridden at any time ( which does not mean John or other people don't ride their bikes !!!). I learned so many things doing this, so I have no regrets. If I don't count the evening hours working on the project, ( and I don't do that ;) ) it really was not expensive and absolutely worth it. For the price I paid, I could have bought a cheap supermarket bicycle - so...
Only the fact that these decals travelled all around the world to finally come to the place they were meant for ( on a Paletti bike ) is an incredible story. A very last step would be to find a somehow period-correct Campy group that's still in good shape and to build it on. If this happens, I'll let You know.

However, I have not seen this paint scheme before. It seem to be NOS

Here's a few bad pics of my 1989 Paletti Prestige SLX in its two incarnations.I packed up racing back in '92 then finally sold it back in 2001 thinking id never get back into cycling again, but after a 14 year absense from riding I decided to get fit again, and so now I desperately regret getting rid of it.

I wish I could find her but I've no record of who I sold it too. From a purists view she looks better when she had C-Record brakes, hubs, gears, seatpost and Croce D-Aune cranks, but she was better to race on when I fitted Dura-Ace brakes and gears, switched to Modolo bars and stem and changed to C-Record cranks.
I also regret getting rid of my Chas Roberts track bike,it was a metallic champagne/white with red outlined/gold Roberts decals and fitted with S-Rec pista cranks and C-Rec sheriff star hubs/Omega V rims.Unfortunately I've got no pics of it to put on here.
