Fifty Plus (50+) - Chamois tights or chamois cycling shorts under unpadded tights?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

While I've got three pairs of cycling shorts I've never owned a pair of tights. I got off the old mtb and got a new road bike and the baggy sweats have to go. Which is better? Just personal preference?

Definitely go for The padded shorts under unpadded tights. Then when you take the tights off because you have decided You are man enough to brave the little bit of rain and cold-You will still have enough clothing on to not scare the wildlife in your area.

+1, that's exactly what I do.

I have both unpadded tights (for wearing over shorts) and padded tights.
I use the unpadded tights when:
- it's cold but I expect it to warm up
- I am going to spend significant time off the bike and I want something more "non-biking" to wear around
I wear padded tights when:
- I expect the temperature to be cool for the entire ride
- I am on a bike that doesn't have room for me to get rid of the tights
When it's *really* cold, I will even wear unpadded tights over the padded tights.

I only wear them if the temp is less than 45F.

Padded shorts, unpadded tights. Maximum flexibility, Like Stapfam said. I wear mine anytime it's less than 70 in the fall, or 65 in the spring (Iduno, it just seems warmer in spring)

I'll go with the unpadded and consider adding a padded tight down the road.
Thanks all.

Unpadded tights over padded shorts.
But who cares? It's Spring for goodness sake. :D
Time to put the tights away and enjoy the warm weather. Soon we'll be concerned with managing sweat, not keeping warm.
In cold weather, if you wear baggy mountain bike-style shorts, you might wanna consider unpadded tights under the shorts.
Pads? Don't need no stinkin' padded shorts or tights on the RANS Comfy Chair.

One of the nice things about living in Phoenix. I only have to add knee warmers to my shorts in the winter.
