There will be a recumbent race in San Jose end of May (31st saturday)
Latest Info.
#1) The event this year is on SATURDAY, not Sunday as it has been
before.
#2) We can't access the track until 1 in the afternoon because of
regular Saturday training, so we run from 1 p.m. to dark this year.
Location Hellyer Park Velodrome - San Jose California (directions
below)
Cost: $20 to race; students $10; Juniors under 12 $5
$5 to try out the track between races.
Classes
Unfaired - usually includes uprights also.
Partially-faired - either a nose fairing OR a tail fairing
GT - nose AND tail fairings, street rideable
Fully Faired - more than nose and tail fairings
IMPORTANT! For fairness, if you are a very fast rider on an unfaired
or upright bike, after the first race we will move you into a class
that reflects your speed. We're all participating to have fun, not
to cream the competition.
Events:
1) 200 meter sprints (if we have a timing system ready) or 1 kilometer
(if we have to use stop watches). Only one run only per rider/bike
combination except for bike-stopping mechanicals.
2) Juniors race (If we have 3 juniors) - 3 laps
3) Newcomers Race - 4 laps
4) 15 Lap Race - Two sessions but scored separately by class (unfaired
and semi-faired will race together and GT and fully-faired
will race together).
5) POTENTIAL SPECIAL EVENT - a proposed special 4000 meter pursuit
between Randy Gillette and Jim Verhuel. These guys are always
doing battle; let's see them go in the "race of truth"! Randy's up
for it - how about you Jim?
6) New this year for those who want to try it: an Australian pursuit:
4 bikes evenly spaced around the track; you get eliminated if the
bike behind you passes you. We've never done this before so it
could get wild. We will only do this with 4 bikes that are somewhat
equal based on their 200 meter speeds; otherwise it wouldn't be
fair. Haven't yet figured out how the race ends!
7) 30 Minute Race - all classes combined, but scored separately
For those who want to play but not race, there will be time before the
races and between races to ride on the track; $5 covers cost of
insurance.
You must be signed up and have your number (or "T" for track try-out)
before you can warm-up on the track.
Helmets must be worn any time you are on a bike!
PLEASE SIGN UP EARLY IN THE DAY THIS YEAR! The racing will start
quicker if I am not signing up people at the last minute.
If anyone is interested in having an informal recumbent swap meet in
the morning between 10 and 12, bring your stuff and park towards the
back of the lot. Indicate with signs what you have for sale,
otherwise you may find people trying out your race wheels!
For those interested, George and I will be staying Saturday night at
the Comfort Inn in Gilroy (price is about $67 per night). If anyone
else is also staying in the area Saturday night, we could arrange an
HPV group get-together for dinner, etc. Let me know if you are
interested.
Velodrome Location: South San Jose, Hellyer Avenue exit off 101
Freeway
From North: Five miles from 680/280/101 interchange. Take 101
Freeway to Hellyer Exit. Exit curves around and ends at Park
entrance.
Follow yellow signs to velodrome.
From South: Hellyer Ave. Exit. Turn left at freeway exit stop.
follow road until it ends at Park entrance & follow signs.
Parking costs $4 or $5 payable at the park entrance. Most HPV'ers
park on the North side of the track.
IMPORTANT! Bring your own food, drink and shade if you have it.
There are no concessions in the park and no close-by places to buy
food.
200 Meters: We will run the 200 meters by racer number (lower numbers
race first) so you will know when to line up. If multiple riders
will be riding the same faired bike (like you, Cal Poly), you must
let the timers know ahead of time how many so we can space you out to
allow time for rider changes. Also we do not want to wait for
extensive taping; keep it to a minimum.
Everyone will start in front of the stands and pass the stands TWICE.
After the second time past the stands, the timed portion will begin
when you reach the timing tape on the north eastern area of the
track. It is up to you to know in advance where the timing tape is
located on the track and what lap you're on. Fully faired bikes can
request an extra lap, in which case they will pass the stands THREE
times, but they have to let the timer know BEFORE THEY START!
If we do the kilometer instead, it's three laps around the track
period.
Half Hour: Bell will warn when 5 minutes left. Bull Horn will
sound end of half hour. When you hear the bullhorn, riders SHOULD
RACE TO THE END OF THE LAP THEY ARE ON so the lap counters can count
that lap.
Safety is #1. If you are overtaking a slower rider, you must pass on
the outside. NO DIVING TO THE INSIDE OF ANOTHER BIKE. If you are a
slower rider, you must ride straight and stay on the lower part of
the track so you can be passed on the outside. Accidents happen
when slower riders unexpectedly go high.
