General Cycling Discussion - Christmas Tools Gift Questions

My husband has a road bike & we also have a tandem road bike. We don't really have much in the way of tools except for a small quick repair kit we take with us on rides. I was thinking of getting him a workstand, tool kit & repair book. We've only done minor adjustments/repairs so far but want to learn more. I was looking at the Performance workstands and the Pedro & Performance toolkits. I want to get good quality equipment, but don't have $$$$$ to spend. I was thinking of:
Book - Zinn & The Art of Road Bike Maintenance by Lennard Zinn
Tool Kit - 2002 Pedro's™ Large Tool Kit
Workstand - Performance Spin Doctor Pro Repair Stand II

Comments/Suggestions/Other Recommendations?

I don't have too much time to get these gifts shipped & hidden before Christmas.

I just bought the Pedros 2002 kit for $48... WOOHOO (Team Performance plus 20% discount)

I love it.... today I just replaced my whole drivetrain, for the first time ever. Man it was fun, and it only took me a couple hours. The kit has pretty much everything you need to work on your bike!

PS: I didn't even need to buy a repair manual... I just looked at the Park Tool website, the Barnett's manuals hosted here, and the Shimano inserts that came with my components.

Sound like good choices. Park makes a $100 stand that works for the homeowner and folds up pretty small when not in use(They also make the PRS-5(maybe 6 now) that is a pro stand I use for races, VERY nice, and pricey)

The Pedro's toolkit is nice. The tools are sturdy and well made. They may lack some niceties like the vinyl-covered handles of shop quality tools, but are excellent for home use.

The Zinn book is superb as well.

I'm not convinced that the Performance stand is the best way to go. For the money, or a little more, Park's stand may be more substantial.

Thanks for your suggestions. I ordered the Pedro toolkit & the Zinn book. We'll get a stand later. Bikes are in the basement for the Winter now, so there's no riding for the next few months anyways. Good time to learn more before we head out again in Spring. Thanks again & hope you all enjoy the holidays!

As for repair stands..... go with Parks, especially if you own a tandem.

make sure the tools come with a bottle openner and perhaps a cork screw. Very important tools indeed!

Pedro's makes a good bottle wrench. I have one in my toolbox. Unfortunately, I can't justify the expense of the Campy Big Corkscrew.
