Professional Cycling For the Fans - TDF in High Definition??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When is it coming? It's getting a little out of hand!
It's broadcast in HD in France, and seeing as how Versus has an HD outlet ('VS GOLF HD') I don't see why they can't bring it to us here in the States. Watching the Tour or any other cycling event on my 52" plasma in HD would be a wonderful experience.
VSGLF definitely seems tilted toward golf more than other sports. But I also saw come GdI coverage on UHD, so maybe we won't have to rely on VSGLF. :innocent:

or better yet...get really good at cycling and be in the race. thats like HD + 3D + surround sound...
They have enough problems with choppy live feeds as it is, even in the flat stages (to say nothing of the mountain stages). Upping the bandwidth requirements by transmitting in HD might make things a lot more choppy.

We get Versus in HD here, but with all of the politics in the TDF this year I probably won't watch it in HD or standard def.

not going to happen. Look at the issues with this:
1. Cable companies and Directv (to a lesser extent) have limited capacity. Even if VS. could get it, they may not be able to push it
2. VS would have to pay for this. If the cameras and coverage is already there, they would no doubt be charged more to get the HD signal rights.
Now consider the upside
About 329 people in the US watch this. 330 if you include the me, as I spend the 3 weeks in my basement watching more TV than about the rest of the year.
In other words, there is no way it is cost effective. If the market in the US were there, this would not be on VS.
It is beyond lame that they cannot give us information about whether it will be in HD. I have found this to be the case with numerous sporting events. I think if you don't hear that it will be in HD, it probably won't be in HD.

VS HD will be available in So Cal after July 9th. I just talked to a local rep but she doesn't know if TDF is scheduled in HD.
That would be frigg aw+ in my 50" plasma. I did watch Cycling 1080 in HD, french countryside is unreal.
those are some expensive cameras to be carrying around on the back of motorcycles!!
would be cool though.
later.

VSGLF HD (Directv) had already broadcasted Amgen Tour of CA earlier this year in HD but not widescreen (sides cropped). Yes, the TdF will be broadcasted by VSGLF HD!!! After years of blurry, washed-out coverages of TdF, it's good to finally have some razor sharp action! It's never as good as being there but should be "adequate" on my Sony 52" lcd.:thumb:
p.s. Cable, e.g. time warner which I had until Jan. 2008 is totally left in the dust in terms of # of HD channels.
