Wow - linux just keeps getting better and better. I just installed the 8.10 version of Ubuntu and have to admit I'm totally digging it.

Anyone know if it has a mail client that can communicate with an Exchange mail server?

When you mean communicate, do you mean via Outlook/Exchange's closed protocol, or would POP/IMAP work? By default, the Exchange admin has to turn on the POP or IMAP services in the services.msc snap-in, so they are not up by default.

For POP/IMAP, Thunderbird is decent, kmail/kontact and evolution are also good candidates. If you like text mailers, mutt is a solid choice.

I'm kind of making it a project to create a fully functional Linux workstation on our network. I'm trying to see if I can get it to do all the business related functions that a standard Windows based PC would do. Email is the first thing. That and accessing windows shares in a domain environment.

It depends how it tune they are with outlook and if you use ALL the collaborative features of sharepoint, project server etc.

If they are only using the basic functions of outlook any imap compatible email client will work, and be a pretty good alternative. If they aren't using sharepoint etc. Open office is just dandy. I actually use ubuntu on the generic login pc's as they dont tend to do very much beyond the basics.

I have looked extensively at using open office on windows for an alternative to save on cal licensing...but with how some of our users use the callaborative features in office, it just doesn't cut the mustard.

The numbering for Ubuntu follows year.month. So the latest version which came out in April is 8.04. The next scheduled version is due out in October of 08, and it will be 8.10.

I have been using it 100% for over a year now. Love it, and will never go back to windows.

kewl - I might hit you guys up for advice. It's not wanting to see windows shares at the moment. Sure I just need to play with it a bit more...

Our development team uses Sharepoint and TFS a lot, so I could probably never put them on it, but a lot of the staff is clerical and they could probably use it once trained just fine.

We also sell a system to TV stations and I've been thinking of using it as the OS for that. We had a station go off the air because the server needed to be restarted to "refresh" the system resources. A linux box wouldn't do that. The thought of running this stuff on Vista scares me to my core...

Cert should still work, they "should" be platform independent. The big thing is ensuring imap is turned on, some exchange admins don't like leaving it on :)

I would love Linux if it wasn't for the blantant hardware compatibility issues across the board... okay I lied, I love Linux, just not as a desktop-GUI package. I'm stuck with it for a couple weeks and I'm seeing more and more reason to go outside and do stuff.


On the other hand, webmin has created this network-managed media server quite possible, along with a million other features that kick my ass till it's jello and gives it to me in a bucket.

As does my fanless Geforce 8600GT. Okay, I've only used it for games a handful of times, but it'll take any goofy, pointless UI special effect I can throw at it, and it never misses a beat.

Mine runs like in Windows when you don't have drivers installed, minus the fact that I have drivers installed.

I had to do something goofy to get it to work right but I can't remember what it was....

The accelerated Nvidia and ATI drivers are non-free binaries (unless AMD has changed this since acquiring ATI), so you most likely have to go out of your way to install them.

Though I think newer versions of Ubuntu are giving you a way to do so automatically, at least with Nvidia drivers.

Without wading through a lot of muck here, I already have XP Pro installed at home. I have a 300GB drive partitioned into 3 100gb parts. Can I install Ubuntu on one of the empty partitions AND set it up to dual-boot without blowing away my wife's digital picture collection (on the C drive with Windows)???

yes - you should be able to do that. You'll have to reappropriate one of the empty partitions and possibly subdivide it. The Ubuntu installer is pretty good at walking you through it.

In Ubuntu 7.1 you had to install an extra component in order to get the ATI driver working properly. I can't remember off the top of my head what it was though.
