View Full Version : Century: 1 day or 24hrs?

I know a century is 100 miles in a day. But if I do 50 miles in the morning and 50 in the afternoon, does that count as a century? Also, the day must be 'calendar day' or just a 24 hrs day? What if I do 50 miles from 7 to 10 PM, sleep and do another 50 from 8 to 11 AM the next day?
I'm asking because tomorrow is my last chance for my May century and I want to watch the Giro too.;)
If the answer is no, would it be cheating doing the May century on June 1 and another one in June?

IMHO same day counts, to paraphrase Tom Hanks, "there's no sleeping in cycling". I think a lunch break is acceptable.

Dude, you take this way to seriously. Just go ride and don't worry about the technicalities.

Options:

1) TiVo the Giro and watch it when you get done riding.
2) Start at 2am so you have your day free to do other stuff.
3) Listen to Chip and just stop worrying. (UMCA rules do allow you 2 "make up" rides for a missed month by doubling up the next month if you're going for the LS Award.)

1) 1 day is 24 hours.

2) There's no sleeping on century rides ... only on 400K brevets and up.

3) Generally centuries are thought of as rides completed as 'all at once as possible', with reasonable breaks allowed, of course, for things like bodily functions, lunch, etc.

4) You could start a century at 9 pm and finish it at 6 am the next day ... it doesn't have to be all in the same calendar day. Some people like to do night centuries.

5) You could do 50 miles in the morning ... from, say, 9 am to 12 pm ... take a lunch, and then do 50 miles in the afternoon, from say, 1 pm to 7 pm. Is that what you're thinking of? I do centuries like this all the time.

5) If you are doing the Century-A-Month challenge, yes, it would be cheating to do a June 1 century and call it a May century. I can't skip my bitterly cold February century and do 2 centuries in June instead ... much as I'd like to. If you are not doing the Century-A-Month challenge, then you can ride your centuries whenever you want.

6) Surely you at least have a VCR so you can tape the race ... or whatever the modern equivalent is.

OK, I finally did 52 km in the morning, came home to watch the Giro and eat (2 hr break) and did 110 km in the afternoon. So May is in.
Chipcom, you are right, but I'm hooked in this century a month thing... but I'm working on it and maybe one day I'll even ride without a computer.

More importantly, how were you able to watch the Giro? I've been looking for a way to see it for 3 weeks, and have had to settle for the live updates on VeloNews. Missed what seems like one of the most exciting races ever. Any insight on how to get it on tv next year would be much appreciated.

I love your dedication! I did the same thing last year. It was more of a personal goal of 12 months straight. I missed January because I had only purchased my first road bike ever in late December. Most of the year was pretty easy. Then in the fall we had terrible fire in SoCal one month and air quality was dangerously bad. I drove over 100 miles to find clean air only to find out the winds shifted over nigh and the area was now engulfed in smoke. Luckily this allowed me to ride close to home the next day. I ended up doing 11 straight. By the time January rolled around I was done. Life and travel plans got me too busy. Good stuff though. Fun thing to look forward to each month. The first 6 or so were really big deals. By the end it was like old hat. Now 100 mile seems like nothing.

I watched it on RAI (Italian Television). Very good coverage of the last 1 -2 hrs of each stage.

Geezo-peezo, someone call Dr. Phil - you've got serious problems.

I suggest you take your bike computer off your bike.

Of course, I knew that already. :)
But they are minor compared to some of my roadie friends'.
