Road Cycling - Truvativ Elita

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am thinking about getting rid of the triple on my Cannondale R600 and getting a Truvativ Elita double, any body have any experience with one? Opinions? Thanks.

If you go by price alone, you would think they're of lesser quality than a 105, ultegra, dura-ace, etc. crank. While I can't make a direct comparison, I will tell you that the elita triple came on my $500 tommaso (msrp $1000, outfitted with a combination of tiagra and 105 if that's any indication).
I've only used the bike indoors so far and the whole package feels pretty good.
the triple is 725 gms compared to 745 for a 105 triple or 760 for ultegra triple.
it's a piece of metal (and an attractive one at that)

my triple looks very much like this (except with three chain rings obviously);

I really like the concave arms.

The ISIS bottom bracket is as stiff as it gets! Frankly, it's the only crankset I would consider at its pricepoint. (It is even made in the USA)
Oh yeah, I'm running an Elita Triple and am very happy with it, although I now wish I had double...
I am afraid that TruVativ products are Made in Taiwan. There's nothing wrong with that since TruVativ decides to locate their production in Taiwan.
The Elita is stiffer than Rouleur but heavier. The Rouleur is lighter than Shimano Dura Ace 7700 but at lower price.
175mm Truvativ Rouleur with American Classic BB and a pair of FSA alloy crank bolts will weight the same as Shimano Dura Ace 7800 crankset but at about half the price(in Asia).

Yep, the Truvativ products are natives of Taiwan. They do much R&D over here and have a good group of guys in Cali, but farm out production to Taiwan. I've never had any issues with their cranks and customers seemed to like 'em on the CDales we were selling with the Elitas.

the back of the crankarms aren't polished. just a minor thing that kinda bugs me about mine. also, it is really hard to find the ISIS bb around for the road frames...I think that the double takes a 108mm, and the MTB ISIS takes a 113, and since the truvativ elita is like the only road isis, the 108 is kinda rare. if you find a 108 BB, snap it up quickly.
I think FSA makes ISIS road cranks as well...
Wow, a dollar a gram. Does that mean if I had eight grand I could get my bikes weight down to...nothing?
As soon as we are able to synthisize spider silk (I am being serious) and manipulate it like CF most everything will weigh almost nothing and be stronger than any metal, go science!

Hi temp1 - if you're still interested, I'm taking the Elita double off my C'Dale and replacing it with an Elita triple. I live in Oregon, which can be a little hilly, and I sometimes pull my 16 pound pooch around with our BOB Ibex. So, I've decided rather than drop the small ring to something smaller and adding a wider range cassette, I'd go the triple route since I already have Tiagra STI shifters, which are triple compatible.
Let me know if you're interested in my double crankset. I would let it go pretty cheap, and it's got less than 500 miles on it. Respond to bdchowell at hot mail dot com.

I have 3 compacts
1) FSA Energy Mega EXO
2) Shimano R700
3) Truvativ Elita
The cranks are listed lightest to heaviest, best to worse in my experience. The Elita when new created a clicking noise on each pedal due to the chain rocking laterally on one of the teeth, that tooth eventually broke off.
Also, the crank bolt on the Elita can back itself out if it's not on tightly. It doesn't have the two opposing crank bolts like Shimano and FSA. I changed the ring, but use it on my Trainer bike now, hope this helps.

I have the Elita compact with the outboard bearings. Been riding it off and on for 2 years or so with no problems whatsoever.
also have the outboard bearing one. compact. no problems. just use locktite on the crankarm bolt and you're good to go.

I've got an Elita compact that I'm meaning to sell... Though I probably can't be bothered to ship them to Denver.
Didn't like the compact (they came on the bike), so replaced with standard Ultegra SL.

I have the Elita compact double on my commuter (Salsa La Cruz). It's fine. For no good reason, I sometimes consider swapping it for some bling, but no idea what...
16,000 miles on mine without a hitch.

^ Ya, I should say that I have about 2500 miles on mine and no issues, noises, annoyances, nothing.

Make sure you torque it right the first time. I've had a devil of a time w/ GXP left crankarms backing out- all between the 2-4K mile mark.

Man thats a GOOD price for that crankset with BB. You cant go wrong. The Truvativ Elita crankset isn't the lightest crank around but its a solid no nonsense crank. I have various older model Elita cranks that have never let me down.

$43 bucks? Do it! Hell, I might buy one just because...
if you want a crankset in a size other than 172.5 with 39/53, there's also this place:

Wow, this thread is 7 years old... That's a third of my life.
That's a good deal though. I got mine new off eBay for $44.19 without a bottom bracket. The bottom bracket was an extra $29. (Total $73)
So far I'm pretty satisfied. Shifting could be better, but that may be because my Ultegra FD is bent? It's plenty stiff for a <$75 crank though.
