Classic & Vintage - Retro Raleigh Clubman / Path Racer now with Budget Rack and Panniers Under $100(PICS)

I just wanted to share with you guys some ideas for a budget rack and pannier set that could be had for under $100.00

Many of you have already seen my Raleigh project. Since my last post of the bike I have added some short fenders and as mentioned a rack and bags.

For a while I have been looking for some inexpensive racks that were sleek and understated. The ones that I have come up with though have all been for around $100.00. So, I decided to go a differnt route and purchased a wald rack form my LBS for $14 and some change. As soon as I got it home though I decided to introduce it to my beloved dremel. These are the results:

The pannier bags are a set of Willie and Max bags that are made for motorcycles. They retail for about $100.00 (I have seen $75 online) but I was lucky enough to score mine for $65.00 locally. I wish they were a bit smaller and lighter but they work. I have a few creative ideas on how to better mount the bags to the rack but for now they are mounted with a set of spring lock hooks.

They came in that silver finish.

I read somewhere that they are plated. So I'm guessing that they might be steel. Which makes me wonder if I should do some sort of treatment to stop it from rusting.

Definitely, if they are chromed steel. The bare steel ends will begin to rust almost immidiately.

Some silver-chrome paint dabbed on the ends should do the trick to prevent any rust at this stage.

Love your bike. I would like some information on your water bottle cage attachment. I converted a '77 Raleigh, but it has no water bottle bosses. I picked up a Minoura clamp on bracket that you can attach a cage to, but it is kinda bulky. Your's looks really slick and I would like to know where to find one.

This definitely wins some kind of C&V Style Award. Incredibly awesome.

The bars are, er, what were they called? Something German. Weyerhauser? Affenpinscher? Something like that. They're beyond cool, which for people like us = no longer manufactured and rare as the truth.

That rack is definitely as steel as they come. If you really want to preserve it, take it to the powdercoater and get it clear coated. I think maybe your bike deserves it.

I appologize for the delay in response to your questions.

I bought the waterbottle mounts from Velo Orange but I think they were some of the last that they had available. In all truth though, I think a pair of hose clamps would work just as good as the clamps.

The bars are Lauterwasser bars that I purchased a long time ago off of Ebay. I've always loved them and knew they were rare so I snagged them even though I had nothing to mount them on.
