Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Bike Shorts, yes it's time

Looking to purchase 2-pair or so now that I"m riding more (for protection). Any thoughts on the Pro vs. Classic for those that have used them? Also, how have people done with their sizing? Want to make sure I don't purchase too big.

i prefer pro, and strongly recommend bibs. they stay in place much better.

I have found them to be one thing to spend money on. For a basic nbe, performance ultras are good and run about $70. I also have some Girodana Lasers (excellent, run about $180) and just treated myself to some Assos F13s (haven;t tried yet, but felt amazing when i tried them on)....those are a wee bit dear at over $200.

If you're riding shorter times (less than 3 hours or so), I'd suggest the performance ultra bibs.

Performance shorts, Oh, that's what he was talkin' about!...I don't like Performance shorts at all anymore. Sizing is way small now. Chamois kill me and leave me irritated. Pro or calssic, including the gel.

Long ago the gel were nice but they skimp on the insert now causing them to roll back just where I needed it. Plus the honeycomb design is very irritating. Seems the holes are all in the right place to dig.

I use PI Ultrasensors for $100, ok but also skimping on the chamois now. But the fit is good. I tried the Quest model from PI. Only $45 and feel jsut as good as the US's. But the leg seems a bit long. Makes me feel like I have skinny knees and short legs. Feel fine on the bike though and worth the mula!

I just bought two more Nashbar Gel Essential bib shorts, on sale right now for $29.95. Then use their 10% off sale right now, and they get even cheaper. I already had one pair.

I have a pair of the Performance Elite Bibs. They run a lot smaller than the Nashbars (I have a XXL in the Performance, and they are snugger than the XL Nashbars). In addition, the Performance bibs on a long ride ended up rubbing me the wrong way if you know what I mean. So no more Performance bibs for me....

Not sure about your size but for the price these are highly recommended. They're made by Velowear and are only 50$. There's also a thread in the road forum regarding the best bibs under $99
I have a pair of bellweathers I use for rides between 20-30miles and a pair of Castelli Wickeds (100 bucks) that I love.

I'll suggest them for riding longer than that. I did my last 2 centuries in Performance Ultras. (06h 48m, and 07h 16m on the saddle.) They're super comfortable for long distance riding. I'm wearing them for my 200km next month and my double century in July.
At the $70 sale price, they don't break the bank, either.

Aerotechs are AWESOME. I've used only one pair of cycling shorts in two years, and they're aerotechs. Now they're getting a bit big on me, and I'm going to order another pair. Worth their weight in gold.

They're ok. They were irritating when I first started wearing them. The threads around the chamois seemed to be to rough. But the irritation went away after about 10 uses. If you feel some irritation keep wearing them.

Did you use any type of butter or creme while riding with these shorts?

It will soften with use. I don't have any issues with mine now, but I also use a chamois creme on each ride just to make sure I get no rubbing no matter what bibs I use.

I also have some from http://www.boure.com/ and they are really nice too. They are a little big in the sizing, so if you are in-between sizes, go to the next lowest size. I have another set from Nashbar and they are ok, but nothing to right home about. I want a pair of the Hammer Bibs, but need to lose some more weight first.

Yeah, went with the Bag balm option for these shorts.

Never use the bag balm, but I use the Chamois But'r and it works great

I recently picked up a Specialized RBX bib, and I really like the thick padding they have. I have some giordana's, but not sure what kind... they are thinner though and I really feel every vibration in the road. The thicker RBX bibs are great and really add to the comfort.

You know, it's strange. I've used Bagbalm for the last couple of years no problem. Alternating with Queen Helen BodyButter. I've used the same model shorts and even the same exact shorts. Seems like within the last month I've had problems with the Bagbalm.

It's been acting as a cutting oil for the seams on my shorts allowing them to dig into my skin. So for now it's QH!:D

Got the butt'r. Its defcon 3. If you're trying a new saddle, shorts or bike you sometimes gotta go with defcon 1 - Bag Balm.

Maybe they change the formula or your eating something that is reacting to it. Also, Dick's is Dick's Sporting Goods. It's a Big Chain store. www.dickssportinggoods.com

I agree that Butt'r is not really worth the money.
