I have to be in Walnut Creek tomorrow afternoon, so planning a ride from the Diablo Rock Gym in Concord. Does anyone know the approximate distance/climbing of the Morgan Territory, through Danville, and up over Diablo (including Summit) loop? I am trying to plan enough time to do the ride and get some quality bouldering in too - and Google maps won;t let me adjust the route go through Diablo state park.
thanks!

Looks like about ~ 8 miles, 1700 feet. At least that's what I got from one motionbased.com route ...

About 70 miles if you go to the summit and about 7,000 feet of climbing.

Here's a profile of a BF ride we did starting in danville, up southgate to the Junction, down the North, out through Concord to and around to Morgan Territory then back back. Summit would add miles and elevation, of course.
Not exactly what you're doing, but this might give you an idea.

Thanks! So either 70 and 7,000 or 58.3 and 5,000! I'll find out tomorrow which is closer to my route. Probably the latter, plus the Summit.
Edit - Ah, it is 4.5 miles from junction to Summit plus whatever additional climbing.

cccorlew: do you have a map of this ride? ... and, dang, would've never thought Morgan Territory = Junction as far as climbing goes.

Last time I rode Diablo + Morgan Territory, my altimeter gave me a cumulative elevation gain of 6666 feet. Kind of appropriate for the devil's mountain :)

72 miles and 6,574 total climbing from the Diablo Rock Gym in Concord. My first time climbing Diablo - nice climb. Unfortunately I can;t claim to have climbed the whole thing. I was riding up the last steep section to the summit and the guy in front of me keeled over! His yard sale blocked the narrow road so I had to unclip. Of course you can't start again on that grade and instead of riding back to the bottom I just walked it the last 100 ft. Maybe I should have gone back to the bottom and done it again, but I was pretty much finished climbing by that time. Climb time from the school at the bottom was 1:05, including the silly walk at the top. For some reason, maybe the chilly wind yesterday, I was kind of feeling the 45 miles leading to south gate.

Nice ride! I would say you did it all.
One time I was riding this last section with my older brother. He did the same thing, keeled over due to cramping. Poor guy was just laying there with both legs cramped up
The group of us, friends and another brother, were brutal on him. It turned into a feeding frenzy of good natured name calling, kick him while he's down, etc. Was one of the funniest things we have ever done to one another. He was laughing so hard, it made the cramping worse. Good times.
Congrats on the ride.

Who says you can't start again there? I threw the chain once and restarted in the middle. It can be done, probably helped that my granny gear was a 24. :p

Even with a granny gear that is pretty good bike handling. I guarantee that me trying that in my 34-25 with Look KeO's would have resulted in much hilarity for anyone behind me!

Wait a minute - did you throw your chain because you were *shifting* part way up the Summit Wall? I don't think I've ever seen anybody try that - they're always in their lowest gear before they leave the Lower Lot.

I didn't think this was possible. The only reason I've made it up the wall sometimes is fear.
I know if I put a foot down my plastic clips will slip and I'll fall, and even if I get back up a restart would be im-flippin'-possible.
Now i know. it's impossible... for me.

It was on the 2006 DMD. I don't know what exactly happened, but I threw the chain to the inside of the rear cluster and it took off my rear wheel. I was about half way up the 17% section. I couldn't get the chain to go back into the 27 and ended up starting off with it three down. I did shift into the 27 before getting to the top.
I only know all this 'cause I went back and reread my write up.
I think mountain biking helps. It's got to be pretty steep or a nasty surface for me to not be able to restart on my mountain bike, so you get into your head that you CAN restart on anything when it's pavement. :D And I don't wear road shoes. I tried them for a week or so and didn't like how slick they felt. Just putting my foot down at a stop light seemed scary in road shoes. :) Oh.. and good balance... I've done 2.1 mph on my bike and kept it upright. Let's just say, I will never make it to the summit in a little more than an hour. What is it Jens Voigt said, "The big climbs, they don't like me."
