Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. My sister is purchasing a bike soon for exercise and use mostly in a large city/ public paths. Its her birthday and I'm looking to get her a good helmet for something around $40. I read that the 2008 helmets have a rounder, smoother shape and are best for crashing. The source called it a "compact" helmet.
I have no clue on helmets whatsoever, and am hoping to get some suggestions for decent helmets in that price range. Thank you much!
Get the lightest one for the price. The weight should be marked on the inside somewhere. They are all the same strength-wise.

How about a Bell Citi (http://www.rei.com/product/747024?preferredSku=7470240016&cm_mmc=cse_froogle-_-datafeed-_-product-_-na&mr:trackingCode=3ADD49C2-752E-DD11-98CA-001422107090&mr:referralID=NA)? It's got a good, round shape. Nothing pointy to catch if you fall.
Nutcase helmets (http://www.nutcasehelmets.com/Pages/index.aspx) are also round - and come in cool colors. :D

If you want round, how about a Bell Faction? $35 MSRP

What to look for:
She won't always wear something that's unpleasant. They all fit just a bit differently, and what works for some heads won't work for others (I can't wear anything that doesn't have an open space in the top center, for example).

I would recommend not purchasing the helmet outright without her trying it on first. I had to try on 8 or 9 helmets before I found one that fit my weird head properly. So, you should take her to a bike shop, get one of the employees to help you get the fit right, and then make the purchase.
Oh yea, I settled on the Bell Citi helmet and love it!
