Road Bike Racing - I don't know how you guys do it.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I raced today. Attacked 40 miles into an 80 mile race. The short course had construction, so we all had to do the long course. I don't know how you do it. I was ready to die at the 10 miles to go sign.
Now I get to upgrade and all of my races will be this long. Holy hell

Ah yes....a move I am very well aware of.....while in total oxygen debt and wondering WTF I'm doing this for in the first place....
It's a great move.
Uh, It sounds like you've got the goods to become a 3, so what's the prob?

40 mile solo break in the 4's = you do well in the 3's. Be happy.

Eat more than you think you need to.
Drink more than you think you need to.
Keep your nose out of the wind when you're not aggressing. (You would not believe how many riders burn fuel unnecessarily.

ES. Noted. None of that really matters when the race is 50 miles....

Stay tucked in the pack, let others reel in the breaks, contest the sprint if possible, chatter away after the finish line about how you might fancy riding the fifty miles home so that you meet your mileage goal for the week.

So which is it? 50 or 80?
If you don't want to eat or drink in a 50 mile race, that's your call.

Most of the races i've done up until this point were 50miles, 60 at the most. This weekend was 80 and I'm feeling it. I was trying to say that you're advice was correct, but the consequences of not eating/drinking enough aren't so bad if the race is only 50 miles long. This race was longer. I suffered.
