i would just go and try them out. me and my friend are both 5'9 and he has longer legs than me. i think he rides like a 19 or something and i only ride a 16.
Im bang on 6 foot and a 19" giant XCish bike fit me. I'm pretty even as far as torso/leg ratio goes.
I do however ride a size small iron horse DH bike.

5' 10" is about average height for a man, so start looking with whatever the bike manufacturer labels as "medium". Proportions matter as much as total height, though, so try a variety.

I'm 5'10" [5'11" on a good day] and ride a 54 cm Cervelo, a 17" Brodie, a medium Trek and a large Titus.

16, or 18, aka medium. I had a 19 that was perfect on fire road type riding, but was a handful on anything technical. It felt like driving a school bus in a F1 race.
I'm 5'11" about a 33ish inseam, and was very happy with the fit of a Medium Gary Fisher 29er. In fact, my new frame pretty much duplicates the effective top tube and seat tube of a medium Fisher.

I'm 5'10" and ride a 19" specialized hardrock i ride a 56cm (or 57cm can't remember) scattante r-660
It depends on your proportions too, not just your height. If you have short legs and a long torso you may have a different bike than someone with long legs and a short torso.
