I'm looking to build up my race frame for the spring.. '03 Orbea Lanza. I'm looking for hubs. I need advice. I'm not well educated in the MTB scene, I know enough.. but this is my first season racing so I don't need the best of the best. I do work at a shop thou, so I get cost...

Advice please

Discs or vee brakes?

If you've got the money, Chris King makes one of the finest hubs.

Hugi makes a very good hub.

I've never really been a huge fan of Shimano hubs. They're "o.k.". If I were on a budget, the XT level hubs are "fair".

Ringle also makes a very nice hub.

If you can find them, a very good hub for little money, is American Classic.

What else? Phil Wood Hubs.

Woodman Products

Too many others.

Profile Racing makes a very durable heavy use hub. Not the lightest though.

I want something race worthy like Kings' but we aren't a King Dealer so I can't get them. I want from medium to high level grade if that helps

Chris King ISO discs are the ones I'm considering for my own "race" bike. But since you don't carry them, I'm not too sure. I dont think there are necessarily any BAD hubs out there. Hugi makes some good ones. My Shimano rear hub failed after less than 6 months of moderate riding, so I can't say I recommend them. SRAM makes hubs now, and all their stuff I've used has been top notch.

WOOdman makes a good hub that wont break the bank either. Your shop could get then direct or through BTI.

Give 'em a look-see WOOdman (http://www.woodmancomponents.com/index.html)

Ringles are great...not the lightest, but I have yet to have the need to work on my oldest Ringle hub, and it's 4 years and going strong. Should you need to work on 'em, they're ridiculously easy in that regard. They're great guys too...if you give 'em a call ask for Russel and tell him Waldo sent you.

I can't recommend the XTR disc hubs because I've never tried them, but the best set of hubs I ever owned was a set of old school XTRs (Vbrake, of course). They were super smooth, and extremely durable. I rode them in the worst of conditions for years and even after 3 or 4 years they were still as smooth as the day I bought them. Shimano's quality has dropped since then in my experience. I sold those wheels (Mavic 217s on XTRs) on Ebay and I'm sure some happy rider will get years more life from them. Those were the best wheels I ever owned. Now I have a set of Mavic 3.1s on XT hubs and the hubs have crapped out on my once in less than a years worth of riding.

Booo Shimano... boooo..

Hey Arsbars,
If you can't get Chris King hubs, then definitely go with White Industries. They are very reliable and great looking! After that, XT's are fine.

ps Why isn't your shop King certified?

Yeah, why are you not able to carry Chris King? I'd address that issue before deciding on any hubs, 'cause Kings are the way to go. Plus, all the anodized colors...ahhh!
