Just read in Adventure Cyclist that Wyoming is planning on banning motor vehicles from all streets and roads for the entire week of July 16 -22, with the exception of Interstates 80, 25 and 90. Apparently representative Buck Autry (R-Meeteetse) introduced it as a joke, to make a point about how ridiculous all this alternative transportation talk is. He actually voted against it himself. Governor Fred Thal said "People can drive as close as possible to where they're headed on the interstate, then walk or bicycle from there. Or ride a horsee. We like to brag about how we're the last of the Wild West--well, we're gonna let people live the dream." Rumors abound that Lance Armstrong is planning a group ride across Wyoming that week in support of the idea.

I would love to see San Diego try and do this.

Apparently the Governor must have lived all his life in a city, and doesn't know much about how ranches work. I wonder how he'd like it if his economy slowed to the same level as it was before motor vehicles helped boost it.

Can they do something about the headwinds there too?

What would Lance have done if they banned cars during his TdF wins?

Well of course this is a joke. There is no representative Autry and the Governor is Dave Freudenthal. Oddly enough the state gov't is quite bike friendly. The WYDOT has a pretty nice cycling page, they provide (free of charge) most of the traffic control signs for races and bike tours and they even have a community outreach programs that includes cycling. Plus, the Wyo Highway Patrol supervisor in my district, happily supports our stage race. I can't vouch for all the drivers, but many of them are bike friendly as well, especially in the rural areas (well 99.9% of the state is rural but I meant away from the towns). Most of my problems with drivers have been out of state drivers (both young and older) and semi trucks. But the best deal here is summer ridiing. On Saturday I did a 40 mile ride. Two stop signs, pretty good pavement. Maybe saw 20 cars total. Also saw 7 other bike riders. Had it been a week day, I would have seen maybe 5-10 cars.

I would love to see that in San Diego.

p.s. We are not the last of the wild west either - we are the heart of the energy boom and it is having a seriously negative impact on our air and water quaity (but that is in another part of the state).

The Tour De Wyoming sells out its 450 spots in less than 1/2 hour. they have been doing that for years.
There arent toomany other tours that can claim that. Sure a lot of a sell out has to do with
the organizers, but its still takes towns and roads to complete the experience.

Not for nothin' but....the oil companys have almost eliminated driving already.
I just drove back and forth to Chicago from upstate NY twice in the last
month and made another round trip from Rochester NY to Albany NY.
Traffic was almost non-existant. The old Bumper to bumper traffic up
and down Rt. 90 seems to be a thing of the past. Other than around major
cities I would have felt completely safe riding my bicycle right down
the middle of the road.
