Mountain Biking - Winter Mountain Biking Tires

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This winter, I'm going to mountain bike - that decision has already been made. I've not ridden the trails in the winter, so I'd like some advice from the folks that have done this. I think I have a pretty good handle on what I need with the exception of tires. I'm currently running tubeless. Can I continue to run tubeless tires @ a low pressure, or should I go with a studded tire?

We've got some homemade studded tires at home. They are made with some cheap slicks, short wood screws, and a long strip of neoprene from some old holey waders we had. Put a screw ever 6 inches and offset every other one.

i've never really needed studs when riding in the winter as long as there's some powder on top. If you're not going studed just find the most aggressive tire you have and good luck

I get an old tire that still has nobs on it... so you get traction in snow but then stud every other nob if you can for the occasional ice you don't see under the snow. I have found that a rivet gun works GREAT, I have tried screws and everything else, and rivets seem to last long... they don't tear the tire apart as much as a screw does after a season of riding on em.
If you don't go studded get the softest compound tire you can so it doesn't stiffen up in the cold weather and you have much better traction!
