I'm sure many of you saw my post in the road cycling section and for the ones who didn't just look under "crashed on my face". I am here today looking for some advice on a cross country racing rig. I weigh 140lbs and am looking to build something from scratch, unless I can find a really good pre- built. It needs to be nice but not crazy, good bang for the buck. I consider a good bang for the buck road bike to be Sram Rival with Dura ace crank and maybe a Cannondale Six13 frame, just to give you an idea of what I have in mind.

Throw me your suggestions.

How much $$ you want to spend and what material do you want to ride?

Less than $3,000, $2,700 sounds like a possible number. As far as material I have no idea for mountain bike use. But I don't see carbon as being as much of a benefit as it is on the road.

Hardtail or Full Suspension? Most likely this is based either on preference or on local trails you plan to race/ride. Most of the MTB world has moved to full suspension, but a lot of times it will be overkill.

Start by trying some out. Check out your local shops and see what all the other fast guys are riding and which shops are active in your local MTB scene.
Cannondale Scalpel
Kona Hei Kei Supreme
Giant Anthem
Specialized Epic
Trek TopFuel
Fisher HiFi Plus 29
GT Marathon
Jamis Dakar XCR Expert

They all go really fast, all will surely feel different given all the different suspension setups and components. Find something you feel comfortable on and check out any demos in your area.
