This is the second of two Davis area low key, no drop, rides; this one's a little longer at 54 miles, and involves the Cantelow climb, so there's an 800 ft bump in the middle of this Davis-Winters classic.
The start/finish is at the Starbucks (http://maps.yahoo.com/;_ylc=X3oDMTExNmIycG51BF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEc2VjA2ZwLWJ1dHRvbgRzbGsDbGluaw--#mvt=m&lat=38.562255&lon=-121.769163&zoom=17&q1=2038%20Lyndell%20Terrace%2C%20Davis%2C%20CA) across from the hospital at the Covell Blvd exit off Hwy 113.

**Please note date change from original posted date: July 27th, 2008. Sunday**
This is a SUNDAY ride, not a Saturday ride!

Here's the evelation of this ride, more or less, from the Davis Wiki, with added flat riding before and after what's shown on the graphic:

Rushfan, uh, where is that elevation? *EDIT: oh, there it is*

Anyway, at the moment, I can make it. I'm very much hoping that my bride will be able to as well, it'll depend on what the orthopedist says about her knee at the end of the week.

We'll be deep in the heart of Texas then, so count us out.

But since we do most of this route a couple of times weekly, we know how much fun you all will have, heh, heh, heh. Me loves me my Cantelow repeats. Descending will be shady. But you'll be there early enough in the day to avoid the blistering heat on the climb. Look for the asses on the right after you pass the yellow diamond sign with a squiggly black arrow on it. That's the best part of the climb. After the right-hand switchback it flattens out and you'll be able to upshift. You'll love it so much that you'll want to turn around after the west-side descend and do it again. ;)

Anyway, you'll be one tandem shy on this ride...sorry to miss the good company.

Count me in.

I could almost ride to and from the start on this one and make a century out of it, though the prospect of riding 14 miles in each direction on Old River Road/Road 22 is less than exciting.

Count me and Julie in barring any emergencies. I think Joe mention the possibility of a bail out option if one could not make the full Cantelow climb that connects back on the decent. This may be a good option to throw in there for those not so experience with climbing like Julie and I.

Rushfan
06-30-08, 11:00 AM
The bailout is to take Steiger Hill to Gibson Canyon to Vaca Valley to Pleasants Valley. It adds to the length of the ride 2-4 miles but Steiger Hill is an easier, more steady, shorter climb. Gibson Canyon has some traffic but is a good descent.

If we offer this as an option, we might want to have the group climbing Cantelow to head south on Pleasants Valley until meeting up with the second group or to regroup at the intersection of Cantelow and Pleasants Valley. Not sure the best way to handle this.

We'll scope it out ahead of time and and see if we can handle it. It's about time I get my butt out there. Gonna have to face it sometime if I want to do Foxy's.

Foxy's doesn't climb Cantelow, it goes over Gibson Canyon instead. Gibson Canyon and Steiger are middle ring climbs for me. But Cantelow is good training for the Foxy century route...

It's Solano County's. The county won't issue a permit for Foxy to go over Cantelow or along most of Pleasants Valley Road. Too many people (residents) whine about it.

I hope to be able to make it. I enjoyed jumping in with everyone on the end of your last Davis ride, I was on the low racer recumbent. I took the recumbent with a group on DF's today and we took the alternate route mentioned and went up Steiger Hillls road rather than Cantelow. It was a good ride but you definitely want to get started early on the climb it can get pretty hot and Cantelow is enough without the heat.

BR and ot, 'sorry you won't be able to make the ride, but I'm sure there'll be other rides in the area, and there's always Foxy's at the end of the season.

Hopefully the home construction on Cantelow Rd won't be a big distraction. Is the Butte smoke still drifting down the valley? 'Should be cleared up within 2 weeks, no?

Seems to be clearing right now. As long as the wind keeps up, it should be fine.

Saw Huy & Julie today in Winters (Hi-how was Cantelow?). It's clearing but still not perfect, maybe a little smokier than last month's ride right now, but not a show stopper. I didn't need to hit my inhaler in my 40 mile ride...

We went over Cantelow this morning on the tandem. There's an asphalted road leading up to where the house is being built, so maybe the dump truck action will cease now.

The skies are clear and breathing was easier. I hope that's the last we see of smoke for a while.

So Julie and I decided to drive out to Winters and check out Cantelow in preparation for this ride. That's where we saw Joe. We had a late start so it was a little warm. We decided to follow the prescribed route less the getting to and fro Winters. Things we discovered:

1. We can't climb
2. We can't CLIMB!
3. WE CAN'T CLIMB!!!
4. Above discoveries may warrant a bail out option for the ride.

I managed to ride the the whole thing with lots of stops and long rest periods. Julie had to walk many of the steeper sections :( It boils down to the fact that we just aren't used to that kind of riding. We'd probably be able to do it after a month of training but probably not in time for this ride. We'll try it again this weekend but I'm doubting any major improvements. The decent was fun though :D We still want to join everyone on the ride but like I said above, may need a bail out option. We'll see if our minds change after this weekend. Huy, you and Julie gotta swap out your 11-20 corncob for something with a 25 or 26. :p

Huy & Julie-we can try the Steiger Hill option on Saturday if you're interested. I'm planning on riding with the DBC 3rd Saturday ride leaving Starbucks on Covell at 9am, and we can go over Steiger instead of whatever route the main group takes if you'd like. It's much more steady than Cantelow and a little less steep.

Let me know if you're interested...

p.s. It was really getting warm when you started. 9am might make a big difference, 7:30am even bigger.

If anyone is interested in a century you can park at our house in Vacaville, ride over with us, do the ride and ride back. 25+52+25 should be easy. We plan on a rocket ride to the start then do the laid back part then if there is anything left we rocket home.

Thanks for the offer but Julie says she wants to give driving out to Winters and going over Cantelow another try on Saturday and ride out to Steiger from Davis on Sunday. Wow this ride sounds super cool! I'm just getting into riding and want to join more rides like this! Unfortunately, I'm a "maybe" for this one since I have to leave out of town that day (and I should probably train a little bit).

Will there be a part III? Any other cool/casual/free rides coming up to pencil into my calendar in the Sacramento/Davis area?

Cheers!

Nothing scheduled, but I'm interested in hitting the American River Bike Path for a ride like this. It's a great place to ride if you're not on it every day...and folks from the Bay Area would really enjoy it I suspect.

Also, I'll probably lead a ride in October or November in Capay Valley out by the Cache Creek Casino. Had a good time in March out there.

When I lived off W El Camino in NW Sac I used to enjoy riding on the ARBT, but I suspect enjoyment nowadays is highly driven by the mix of users on these MUTs. I'd be up for it though, it'd be a fun ride as long as everyones expectations were adjusted accordingly. The Garden Hwy would be fun, too. Or how about Folsom? So many places to ride, so little time...

I'm gonna start checking in a couple days on the long range weather forecast for our ride on the 27th. Hopefully it's been tolerable out in the Valley?

I wish that I could report the good nes that Julie and I had a better time going over Cantelow today but it is clouded by the fact that we came upon a horrific accident coming back from Winters. Please see my separate post. I suggest we redo the route to avoid the heavily trafficked section of Covell Blvd (Rd 31) as the speed limit can get up to 55mph with many cars.
