Training & Nutrition - Lactate Threshold Testing/Max HR Testing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I want to determine my true Lactate Threshold level and Max HR's for training purposes. Those in the ultracycling world and racing world recommend riding a flat course for 30-60 minutes at maximum effort. This type of test provides a more accurate measurement of your true max heart rate. Can this type of test be effectively accomplished with your bike setup on an indoor trainer? Will I be able to generate a true Max HR in comparison to what I would achieve if I was riding on actual road with wind conditions?
Thanks,
Tom

there's a book by Chris Carmichael called the Ultimate Ride. Check it out of the library, there's a section in there about doing a field test and they explain how to do it on a trainer. if i recall it seems to work pretty well.
