I work at MGM's Project City Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_City_Center) in Las Vegas. We had our 6th official job site death this past weekend since breaking ground in 2006 (although there have been several more unofficially. They don't count it when somebody dies in the ambulance on the way to the hospital since they are not on the property when they die. The death toll is actually closer to 20.) Last night at midnight we walked off the job and are now on strike. The biggest picket line I have ever seen. Ever.
It's all over the news, and traffic is backed up on the I-15 freeway as well as on Las Vegas blvd and the surrounding roads.

Massive hit to the economy locally. There are on average 8000 workers on the job at any given shift. This job runs 24 hours a day, so 3 8-hour shifts. The average guy there is earning anywhere from 40$-65$ an hour package deal. Lets assume that all 8000 workers are only working 8 hours a day...many though are on overtime working 10-12 hours a day. Assume that each man is making 45$ an hour....that is a low estimate.
That is 2,880,000$ in one 8 hour shift!!! That is how much money is not flowing into the local economy today because the general contractor will not take Safety serious. That is pitiful.

The contractor will have to give very soon. They cannot afford to have 8000 workers not producing. They could fall severely behind schedule in a matter of hours.

Traffic was a mess. But I bet the local bars and restaurants are happy. I didn't see an empty parking lot at any bar or restaurant the whole way home.

Here's the news story:

Now that is a good reason to strike. I wish it hadn't come down to that...but I'm glad you guys walked off and I hope for a quick resolution.

I'm kind of glad that I didn't commute in this morning. For whatever reason I drove my car to work today, really I was just being lazy. I would have had to turn around and do the commute right back home.:(

Enjoy your day. I'd take this chance to ride the lake loop with a detour to the dam/AZ side for a little extra climbing. There shouldn't be much traffic, and the wind won't get too bad untill after about 2pm. If you enjoy mountain biking, Bootleg Canyon should provide plenty of solitude(I rarely see anyone there during the week).

That is a ridiculously high death toll.

It is. I hope the management will see the light. There's just no excuse for it in this day and age.
