Imagine you could get quite alot in terms of scrap value, but it seems like the people that do this offer outrageously low rates - I've seen $25 to $100 offered. I'm sure it takes plenty of work to refine the valuables out of the car, but it seems like these guys just low ball you. I imagine there is tons of copper wire in there, and while some of the precious metals have fallen in value, for a while the catalytic converters were worth well over 500 dollars if you extracted the precious metals from it. We actually had a problem in this area with theives cutting them off cars at night for a while.
I've sold many a car for scrap. I usually got about $25 each, plus free towing. But this depends on the market for scrap.
Call a few junkyards and see what they offer. This isn't much more dificult than posting on the Internet, and you'll get an accurate answer.

It's far more profitable to do most of the scrapping yourself, but if you aren't inclined call around for the best price.

What about donating it to charity? I don't know anything on the stats of the car but you might be able to get a decent tax write-off.
The cutting off and unbolting of cat-converters has been a problem around here as well. Both my parents, a slew of my parents neighbors, and two of my own neighbors have been hit up in the last month.

If you want to see your car destroyed, then take it to a crusher yourself. Because otherwise it won't be.
Locally, salvage yards pay $50 for a car that's basically complete, and $150 for a car that is in drivable condition--assuming you transport the car to them. If they have to tow it, then it's -$50 off both those rates. A salvage yard isn't going to crush it when it's still got good parts.
One way to ensure the car doesn't get used anymore is to sell it to a salvage yard without a title--but then again, a lot of yards won't take a car that has no title unless it's truly in derelict condition (already been stripped). And also--they won't pay normal prices if you can't provide a transferable title either.

Mixed scrap metal is going for around $340 a ton in the Detroit area. Just across the boarder in Windsor it's around $250 ton.

Generally, a scrap yard doesn't take every bit of the car down to melt. They remove and sell parts that are in working order to keep other old cars on the road. Matter of fact, that's how I did my one and only radiator replacement. (never ever ever let your little brother do car repair for you when you can do it yourself... at least he paid for the radiator when he broke it :P)

Well we just unloaded 6 junkers from out of our back wood lot...I got $2400 for my troubles:thumb: Scrap metal prices are way up. There is a difference between a scrap yard and a salvage yard.
