I'm looking into making my first bike purchase and was hoping for some advice. I live in NYC, so I need something that can handle the rigor of the streets (potholes, curbs, sudden stopping, etc), but want something that I can also take out on light trails. I've been looking at Trek's FX 7.2 & 7.3 models as well as the Specialized Sirrus model. I also have a couple of friends who think as a starter bike, I should actually go with Trek's 3900 or 4300 mountain bike, because they think it would offer additional & necessary support as a first-time rider in a pretty rough city to bike around. One of these friends actually uses hybrid tires on his 3900 to give it a little more flexibility. For this general price range, any thoughts?

7.2 Hybrid is relatively cheap and can be pretty rugged, if I'm not mistaken it comes with 35mm tires... I would think plenty thick for most streets. I can jump curbs on my hybrid with 32 mm tires... Mountain bike is ok, but if you have a suspension on it you will lose a lot of power into it. Then again if you do want to go off road a mountain bike is nice to have. Try finding a mtb that has a lock out suspension. Turn it on and off at your convenience.
