Road Cycling - So, still shaving your legs this winter?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I don't think much has been said on shaving legs during the winter, so are you :)

Come on now, fess up!

I'll admit it, I do. It's the best time of the year to do it. Right after you get finished you can run out naked and sled down the hill at record speeds.

I still shave even though I have been slacking on my riding. I admit it I like the feel.

Definitely still shaving and I don’t plan on stopping until I decide to stop for good. Not only was it a pain with the brief period of redness, but without smooth legs the grippers on my leg warmers and shorts just slide around and cause further redness. Plus it just looks nice:)

I too am still shaving. Of course in AZ winters there really is no reason not too. Plus, like it has been mentioned, the feel and look is just to good to let go of!

May i ask what exactly is the point of shaving?

For me, it just keeps my shorts/warmers in place better than with hair. Others prefer the ease of road rash clean up. And of course the common rumors of increased speed are always a favorite.

Never needed to,never will,no point in it.Do you shave your body because you swim at the gym?

It has actually been proven that shaving slows you down, (the dimpled golf ball effect). We shave because everyone else who is serious about racing shaves. In the snowy rockies there is no need to shave in the winter.

i still do. some pierce, some tattoo....i shave. legs and pits. i like the feel and in summer suntan lotion goes on well and in winter, the messages and dry skin lotion goes on easily.

Still shaving. It doesn't get cold enough for full leg coverage. I either wear a pair of knicker-length shorts or put on a pair of leg/knee warmers.

Don't shave in the summer, why would I in the winter? ;)

My feelings exactly!!

I haven't shaved in 5 weeks  and can't stand the way my legs look - all those short dark hairs getting longer each day. :crash:
And the tan lines have just about faded away.

But the good news is that today is the first day of winter (in the northern hemisphere - I think??) and starting tomorrow the days will he getting longer. That means warm weather is right around the corner.

Do you all really crash so often that you need to worry about "ease of roadrash cleanup"?

For those guys with a little more body hair, don't you then have to shave your ass, and stomach and chest and so forth? How dumb would it look naked to have shaven legs but a hairy ass and stomach/chest!

Anyone here with a unibrow?

I shave in the winter, but not as often. I'll let it go for a while. I don't have very hairy legs anyways. I've always considered myself fortunate, I'm not hairy at all. I had some friends who'd have to get waxed, the whole bit, when they went on vacation in the winter.

How far up do you shave? Just above the knee or right to the groin? Surely it grows back at an alarming rate?

Funny enough I'm not tempted.

Here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?postid=335165#post335165) is a link to another thread (with pictures) that discussed how far up the legs to shave.

I shave every 3-4 days.

I take it you don't swim regularly?
You would definetly get stared at.

The part you don't shave.... is it thick with fur?

Continuing throughout the winter (well, the not-warm months).

They start to itch really bad after only a day or so,
so I have to stay on it. Besides, I like it, for all the above reasons.

I'm still shaving, but not nearly as often. During the summer I'll usually do it every second day, but now it's more like once a week. In the summer I keep them shaved for the look, which isn't a real concern in the winter. But everytime it starts to grow back, it just looks dirty and starts to itch... so I pull out the razor.

I razor shave from the underwear area down, and then use an electric shaver (like for head hair) to keep everything else trim, without the trouble of shaving those hard-to-see areas. :)

In the end, it's a personal choice... not a real matter of performance or function, but of your individual style and attitude towards cycling. I wouldn't have even considered it a couple years ago, but now it just seems natural and not femine at all.

I am a member of a cycling club and I must say that I am the only member who's hairy and doesn't shave. What is the point of shaving, besides looking good, does it improve cycling???

When I first started it, a fellow at my LBS told me that, technically, there is no actual advantage, but it sure makes you feel like there is.
I have to concur.
The first time I tried it, I felt like I was flying.

I haven't shaved my legs since I played high school football back in '77 (it was either shave or have all the hair yanked out when I took off the tape). I've decided that real men don't shave their legs. Besides, I like picking all the dead flies out of the hair on my legs when I'm done riding! :D

In addition to all that, don't you (we) wear leg warmers in winter anyway? This kinda begs the question of why one would need to shave ones legs if ones legs are not visible and, since [they are] covered with nylon/lycra/gortex, etc., not likely to add drag to ones ride anyway.

Personally, I don't shave my legs. They are just too damn big and I don't want to spend the money for extra blades! I used to wear nylons and a garter belt, but it was so hard to keep the seams straight, so I switched to pantyhose! :p

When you crash, you have the possibility of grinding gravel and other bits of road debris into your legs. If there is no hair, the possibility of infection is lower and it is easir to find the bits of whatever and get them out.

I have skin problems : if I don´t try to keep body hair short then aplying meds, body milk etc is a messy wastefull hassle , tried putting sun block on a hairy leg or arm lately ? it´s a pain .
