... nothing planned ??? What's up with that? Well, I was thinking of doing Sierra - Felter, then Calaveras back (essentially the last part of TofC Stage 3). Anyone else have any better ideas for a ride this weekend?

Well, I guess the main question for me is ... how long will I be able to hang in with them? I know I can hang with Alto Velo B ride until they get to a slight incline. For example, when they go up Sandhill. Yeah, Sandhill is not much of a hill, but that's where they lose me.
Anyhow, I might be up for that if there are no other rides planned.

I'm doing my 4th 200k for the R-12 on Saturday. It's Jo's East Bay route. She's celebrating her anniversary :thumb: so I won't have a riding buddy. I'd wait and do it later in the month, but my anniversary is next weekend and the weekend after that is my first tri. Leaving a ride for the R-12 until the last weekend of the month is a bad idea.

Hopefully, if I can shirk my responsibilities of household chores, I'll be riding outside of Auburn again.

Well, let's do it. Should be fun joining the big group for a bit.

Does the PenVelo ride still split at Alpine into racers and recreational riders? Back when I used to ride with them, Carlo Simonetti would take the century/recreational crowd on a slower ride down to Los Altos. I don't know where the racers went - I could never keep up!

Don't know. This would be the first time joining them. Come along... at least if we get dropped, we can still ride on our own.

True, I mean we'll be like our own mini group..
Plus if we split from their group, we would just be riding in the Peninsula, which is probably what I would be doing otherwise as it is. :thumb:
Hmmm mini-group.... Think we could organize our own surprise lead-out sprints for the markers, or a brake-away towards the finish. ;)

I don't know how it is these days, but the Saturday ride used to be pretty do-able, at least until Portola, where it tended to string out a bit. Then it would split at Alpine, and I'd go with Carlo's group. Where the racers went after that, I have no idea. We never saw them again.
The Sunday ride was a different matter entirely. We'd roll together to Woodside, then the speed would start creeping up, which usually meant I'd get dropped by Tripp. Those of us who got dropped would regroup at Alpine and take a shortcut, meeting up with the racers at the Chevron station for a wild ride up Canada. I'm sure the racers were taking it easy, but I was always running near the redline!
Not sure if I can make this or not. My mother is moving to Reno next month and there is a ton of stuff to pack. Most likely I'll be up in SF riding somewhere early morning or late evening.

Just got back from the Penn Velo ride. It was cool. First time riding with them, and they all seem really friendly.
Met Blastradius and Genejockey there. It wasn't too cold, as the sun was out. The lake was so calm and serene, it's too bad I didn't bring my camera. It was a perfect day for a ride.
The ride started rolling, and Blastradius and I wound up at the front. WTF ... we were leading the pack. I knew this wouldn't last, so I deliberately wanted to pull off, and duck in the pack. Little did we realize how big the pack had grown. When we first started, it wasn't that big, but by the time I pulled off, it took me a good 3 minutes to get back into the pack. It was a long train, probably 60 riders at least (maybe more).
That was fun ... I think someone said we averaged 22 mph down Canada. We stopped at the corner of Woodside and Canada for a break. Then, it started again, and some went up OLH, while others went onto Portola Valley. At this point, genejockey and I was at the back, and the pack was nowhere in sight. So we decided to go at our own BF pace. We wound up going through Alpine, Arastradero-Purissima, Robleda, Burke, Edith, then onto Foothill Expy back.
On our way back, we went up via Sandhill. We saw an accident on the overpass over 280. There were two cars involved, with a bike sandwiched in between the two cars. As we passed the two cars, we saw the bike was run over by the car. The rear wheel was literally steamrolled by the truck in back. We asked if everything was ok, and the cyclist said okay. He wasn't injured, and didn't see any evidence that he had gone down. It was just weird. Does anyone know what happened?
We got back to the cars, and I saw someone else with a NorCal jersey ... it was Zorro. He just got there, and was just starting his ride. Good to see him on the road again.
Sorry, no pics. Didn't bring the camera.
Oh, and Henry, I did get your text message. Unfortunately, I left my cell phone in the car. Lot of good it does being there, eh?

Ride Report (Sorry, no pictures)
I got rolling a little late, and I thought I might miss the rollout at Canada and 92, so I rode hard from home, hammering the hills on Alameda, Crystal Springs, and Skyline. Turns out I got there in plenty of time. I met Henry and Ron, and chatted till the group got rolling. We made the mistake of starting out near the front, so after a mile when the lead pair swung off, Henry and Ron were were pulling the train. Then some jackrabbit came around and Henry took off after him with Ron in tow, and suddenly I was pulling. I pulled for about a mile and a half, then swung off and drifted back...and back...and back...and back. It probably took another half mile to get to the back of the pack. By now, we were really moving! Well, I mean, to me it seemed like we were really moving. The PenVelo guys probably thought it was a nice gentle warmup!
I managed to hang on to the pack all the way to 84, where they stopped to regroup. There I found Henry and Ron again - and after that, I never saw Henry again! We headed out 84 to Kings to Tripp, and I was holding on, but once the pack turned onto 84 again, that little rise just killed me. But I found Ron again! He said some riders were going to go up OLH, and Henry was probably going to go with them.
We turned onto OLH, but within about 200 yards, we both admitted we didn't have a climb left in our poor, tired legs. So, we headed out Portola, to Alpine, to Arastradero, to Purissima, to Robleda, to Foothill, and headed back to Woodside and Canada. Along Foothil I had to slow down to eat, and discovered that eating a peanut butter sandwich while riding and mouth breathing can be a problem.
Ron and I swapped pulls on Canada, since the headwind was just starting to blow. This lasted till the hill after the Water Temple, when my legs sent a message to my brain wondering what the hell I was thinking.
So we rode the last mile or so to Ron's car gently, met another BFer (sorry, didn't catch the name!). I bid farewell to Ron, and dragged my sorry behind the last 8 miles home.
Total: 56 miles.
I'd forgotten what a kick it is to ride fast in a big pack. And my pack riding skills came back to me - I didn't get hypnotized by Henry's back wheel, or worse, run into it! Thanks for suggesting this, Ron!

hey, we saw you going north, on the path, right at where 101 cross the bike path.
by the way, I'm pretty sure I saw Zorro a couple weeks ago in SF, at the Panhandle.

I got up early enough this morning to actually eat and digest for about an hour before heading out. I think that made a big difference for how I feel on the rides. I rolled out about 7:15 and cruised up San Bruno Ave, down San Andreas Trail and Sawyer Camp Trail, and arrived at Canada/92 right at 8am. I purposely I tried to not tire myself out before riding with the group.
Like Doug and Ron said, we somehow ended up at the front but the pace wasn't too bad and kinda leisurely according to Judge whom I spoke with a bit at the first regroup. So the "hungry" ones turned up the heat. I think the group was still with us just past the Water Temple but by Edgewood there were only 7-8 of us doing 28-30+ mph nearly all the way to the Woodside Bakery regroup. Wow, fun!
When we got rolling again Ron, Doug, and I were near the back and we whipped through Kings Mt Rd, Tripp, and 84. That false flat on Portola Valley Rd nearly had me but I hung on the back till Alpine, whew. The descent on Alpine was fun but being at the back kept me from going as fast as I would have, especially the fun little right then left turn onto Arastradero. Again, nearly got dropped on Arastradero but luckily it was short and I could recover on the slight downhill to Page Mill. The pack turned east onto Page Mill and just past 280 when the hill turns up the elastic snapped. I got dropped, along with about 4 others. So up along Foothill, Sandhill, and Whiskey Hill I rode with Mike from Third Pillar, good guy.
The group was still at the Woodside Chevron when Mike and I got there so we were able to jam back on Canada with the group. It was pretty mellow until we crested the hill just past second stop sign. Then the pace turned up again, 25-30 and still 20+ on the two hills just past Filoli and just before the end. The pack was hitting 30+ for the last sprint but I was dog tired and hung back.
Everyone split pretty quickly so I sent a text quickly to Ron and started for home. I ended up with 61 miles and +3619 feet of climbing. Lessons for next time: definitely eat before the ride, bring two bottles of sport drink instead of one and one water, remember to drink more.
BTW, staying at or near the front is definitely easier than hanging off the back.
Marco, it was fun! Sorry you missed it. Maybe next week.

I think Doug and I lost contact with the pack after we got to Portola Valley (passing the intersection of 84). I thought the group went up OLH, but I guess it simply continued on Portola Valley, which is what we eventually ended up doing.

Yep, when the pack turned onto 84 from Tripp and accelerated up that rise, I tried to sprint to catch up, but there wasn't a sprint left in my legs.

Where are you riding?
Alpine back way of Mt. Tam then the Marin Headlands. Plus all the steep stuff in the Richmond district and Presidio before the GGB. About 68 miles and 8300'. There was a play of some sort going on near the summit of Tam causing a lot of traffic and school buses moving people down from the top. Very hot from the sisters to the summit, quite windy but stellar views.
I saw Jin and his friend on the Sausalito trail under the 101 bridge heading back, I recognize those b@stard ale jerseys. I was in high pursuit of a carrot though who was dialing it up to 400 watts so I only quickly waved. He didn't go up Camino Alto though.
