in the past 72 hours, events conspired against our household:

indoor exercise bike broke
outside AC unit died
high-end kitchen fridge s*** the bed
truck required essential maintenance

it was disheartening and i felt like i had been mugged to the tune of $4846.23 (cost of repair/replacements)...

on the upside:

we easily handled the cost of repairs
exercise bike company shipped and i recv'd replacement part in less than 48 hours
AC is being replaced in 24 hours (important when local temps are now 90F+)
we don't need to use the truck - i'm riding my bike instead...

and most important:

wife saw how despondent i was, decided for us to have our own little party and 'get happy'

[now doing the 'Happy Happy Joy Joy!' dance]

On the upside, you don't mention anything about having to fill your gas tank..............:D

Heck - in the space of one year (in 1994) I had a heart attack at the age of 44, my wife had an affair which ended in a divorce after a 19 year marriage, my mother died, the company that I was working for went bankrupt, sold and I eventually lost my job, my brother-in-law was killed in a car accident and I had to sell a beautiful home that I extensively remodeled on my own.

Ouch! That was a tough year. Since it obviously didn't kill you it must have made you a whole lot stronger.

OP, are you bragging or complaining?

OP, are you bragging or complaining?

nope, recovering...

:-)

(although dlharrison's post makes me feel much more fortunate - 1994 was indeed a rough year for him - i don't know how i would have handled that experience)

How long did your refrigerator last? My wife and I are shopping for a new unit only because our basic top-freezer 18 cu ft Whirlpool is just over 20 trouble-free years old, and we want to replace with something more energy efficient. I have heard that the newer refrigerators run all the time and do not last as long as the older units, but I have not been able to verify this myself.

DUDE!!! have you recovered yet?
It does sometimes seem as if these sort of things run in packs. You were due for about 20 years of good times after a stretch like that.....

We had to replace our Amana side by side last July when it failed. It was just a few months past 10 years old & the compressor etc warranty was....10 years. Repairs will cost big bucks with not much of a warranty. New units are chock full of features, can also be spendy & it becomes similar to shopping for a car. My wife has back problems, so we opted for a double door model with a pull out freezer below. Less than 8 weeks later, the movers dented up the front, so we received a new set of doors.(Only took a few months on the phone to get satisfaction) :)

fwiw: fridge was a high-end KitchenAid Superba, which only lasted 7 years... replacement was a Whirlpool 25.3 cuf w/in-door ice, ice/water dispenser... same features as replaced fridge but $1,000 cheaper and a better Energy Star/electric use rating...

My, you are the persistent one aren't you!

I doubt I would have remained on hold for more than about 30 minutes.

have you seen the prices on the new bikes?

according to Bicycling Magazine, i need to budget at least $8,000 to $12,000 for a new road bike - anything else just won't do!

:-)

(very happy w/my two nice road bikes, cyclocross bike, and $100 pawn shop-special Specialized Crossroads!)
