View Full Version : Any reason not to use a Downtube 8FH stempost on my R20?

I'm taking Mulleady's sick DT off his hands, eventually to salvage the hub for my Moulton project. In the meantime, however, I've been thinking. The main thing holding up my R20 project is the time for the wheelbuilding. I started it, struggled, need to restart, and with a new baby, can't put aside the time. I can do everything else on the bike in 10 minute bursts, and if I'm going to be in possession of a pair of 406 wheels with an 8 speed hub, I might as well use those to get the bike up and running for now. That got me thinking about what else I could use, and the stempost came to mind - as standard, the R20 has a long stem that drops into the headtube, but it seems to me the DT stempost goes much higher, and would allow more flexibility. If I'm not mistaken, the DT post uses a quill, but is it 1"? Any reason I couldn't use it?

Might be a bit too high - I reckon if you were going to fit a 'modern' folding stem tube you'd need to cut a few inches from the upper extension of the headtube; Obviously you need to do the measurements and you might like a nice upright position but I think it'll still need a little shave for it not to be too high.

Good idea though - doing that might make for a better fold than the stock one; Sadly - I have no idea about whether it's a 1" or 1 1/8" quill on the DT.. Where's Yan when you need 'im? ;)

The DT quill is 1", the R20's 7/8" diameter. I have been turning this issue over in my mind and the only solution so far involves machinery.
