View Full Version : Using a Lock on Training Ride

Here's my situation: I often ride alone on long training rides -- long enough to where I need to re-plenish at convenience stores. In some places, I can't keep my bike in my line of sight or bring it inside. So, I am looking for a 5-10 minute locking solution. Most places, I can't lock the bike to anything, but should I bring something more than a mini-u-lock just to lock at least one of the wheels up while I go buy some Gatorade?

Thanks in advance to all for suggestions! (I have done a forum search and the general lock threads don't address my specific need.)

Here are two lightweight, easily stowable locks I use for those situations. They probably offer more symbolic protection than anything -- but at least they may discourage lazy thieves and/or temporarily deter incompetent ones.

Masterlock bike lock (http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(qp325gzssijv41qqrdmcdouo)/productdetails.aspx?sku=56832&source=GoogleBase)

I ride thousands of miles each year on long distance routes where I stop at convenience stores in rural areas. Sometimes I ride in a group and sometimes alone. I don't think twice about leaning my bike up against the store without locking it. Maybe things are different in NC, but in Texas and Oklahoma, I've never had any problems.

Most stores will let you just leave it inside if they aren't overflowing with customers.

I actually bring a cable lock with me as I can stow it in my saddle bag.

I carry the same thing as ConstantRider (the Master Cable with built in lock). Many times you order a sandwich or there's a line at the store where you have to wait a few minutes. I think it's pretty safe to assume somebody won't be waiting with cable cutters in out of the way stores.

Also useful when you have to make a toilet stop at a gas station or city park.

Why take a chance? if your bike is stolen, think of the trouble and loss of bike and time of getting back home from the boonies, especially with road shoes on.

Ha! That is my local news paper - what a LONG walk. Thanks! I'm telling my DH about this, show him I'm not crazy for always locking my bike up.
