View Full Version : Nice January we're having in Seattle

Wow, considering it's January, the weather in Seattle is not too bad this week. This morning, all I had on was shorts, tights over the top, a poly undershirt, a jersey, a rain jacket, and a rain cap for my helmet. I didn't even have to wear my heaviest winter gloves! And I didn't see any ice on the way in!

And who says that winter in Seattle is tough for commuting!

Ooh....wait....just glanced at the calendar....:(

I suck. I couldn't face yet another day of polypros, long sleeves, full gloves, and putting on alll my still drenched gear at the end of the day to ride home... so I drove to work. Where the heck is summer? I'm losing out on valuable post-ride pool-side grilling party opportunities because of this weather.

Come on, guys! It's 50 degrees and hardly raining at all right now. Heck, it might even clear up this afternoon. The the forecasts for Thursday and Friday only call for partial rain! OK, so I had to get my rain gear back out again and find my woolies, and I'm using the glove/shoe drier at the end of the day, but it's June! Summer was last week, during May.

On second thought, you're right...it sucks.

Wait, you mean it isn't supposed to rain every day of the year?:bang: When I lived in SoCal, I was given the impression you never see the sun in Seattle. Wrong they were, but yes, feels like it this year.

I'm fine with the rain if it would warm up about 10 degrees. 60 and rainy == OK. 50 and rainy means all the long gear again to stay warm, which is fine...

...in March.

HAHA! I was just up from PDX for a week..last night was my scheduled mid distance ride. I did a 40 miler up the west half of L. Wash on the BG. I returned cold, wet, and feeling identically to when I did the same ride back in March. Same weather, same temp...that's just WRONG!

Summer doesn't arrive until July 5th. :D

I'll take your rain any day. The weather where I'm currently at calls for Highs of 108 all week. Right now at 3 AM it's 95 with blowing sand/dust. Fun times.

This is like the movie Groundhog Day, with the weather of November first repeating over and over.....in June.

Ouch. Dust storms are awful. You're welcome to some of this rain if we can ship it over the Cascades.

That beats the heck out of riding when its 80 degrees out. I did find the rain that resumed just before the return ride from a shopping trip last night to be annoying. But this afternoon was fine for a 25-mile spin around Lake Samish. One of the homes along the road has a mass of azaleas and rhodies out front and the smell was almost overpowering in the cool damp air. Thimbleberries are in full bloom right now, too with their brilliant white blossoms.

I hope at least the rain stays away for Flying Wheels next Saturday. This morning's commute was pleasant enough.

I hope it's warmer than this morning's 46 degrees for FW.

My brother is getting married in his backyard today - in the rain. :( The weather has been so incredibly crummy...

Oops!

I'm looking out my window right now, thinking....'it's a good thing I didn't decide to mow the lawn today'.

Yes, it's raining...and it's cold.

I have the heat turned up in the house--it got down to 50 degrees last night.

What a bunch of whiners. 50 degrees is nice; it's only water. Haven't heard any whining in Portland. Looking forward to the south wind blowing me home. If it were 80 or so, I'd likely have a warm headwind and a big hill to get up.

It's funny! You know, it does suck to ride every day for two weeks in the rain. Dragging out the winter gear in June (yep, me too) is not always looked upon as a good thing. I'd take a couple 65 degree days any time! ;)

Went out to do some hills yesterday; it was just overcast when I started. While going up Norway Hill (from 7 Hills of Kirkland and S.O.B. fame), it started to sprinkle. I was fine until I went down the back side of Norway and started to get rhythmic brake noise from the rear brake. It was a small burr in the aluminum rim; I didn't have any emery paper with me, so I decided to cut the hills out and just do the trail. I went down the north side of Norway using just the front brake. Funny, rain doesn't bother me if it starts AFTER I begin my ride, but no way do I start if it's already raining.

This past weekend I flew to Texas for my mom's 80th birthday party. It was in the mid 50's when I left SEA, in the mid 90's when I got to DFW, and still in the mid 50's when I returned to SEA a few days later.

This sucks. I was really hoping you folks would turn the weather around before I got back in town ;).

The ride in this morning wasn't bad -- a little cool, but a little exercise takes care of that.

The ride home was rather a different story. Rain, headwinds, gusts, and, surprise surprise, it hadn't warmed up. Tomorrow's not supposed to be much better.

June showers bring July flowers?

i went out for a spin at 10pm last night from cap hill to queen anne and back - f*ckin-a, the winds were insane!

i was being blown all over the street it seemed like - the tailwind helped a tiny bit going up the counterbalance though.

I was joking with a co-worker about seeing snow at any time today and he mentioned it was snowing up at Snoqualmie pass today above 3500'.
I was getting out winter gear as well for the commute.

Ok, I put the fenders back on the bike last night. Things should clear up for the weekend now.
Enjoy your ride,

And on the front page of the Seattle Times this morning was an article about the possibility of this current weather lasting through July.

It seems like every 5 to 7 years we have a "non-summer" summer. This is shaping up to be one of those. I hope it isn't.

I came back from Mexico two weeks later this year than last year thinking it would be like it was toward the end of May last year. Sucker!!

Unaware of just how cold it was I went for my first ride in just a jersey, shorts and half-fingered gloves. I lasted two miles before having to turn around in abject pain. Since then it's been leg and arm warmers, full-fingered gloves, fleece top over the jersey, rain-jacket in the bottle cage, etc. This really, really sucks.

Anybody got a vote for a town in Washington with the ideal summer cycling climate? How about Goldendale?

That beats the heck out of riding when its 80 degrees out.

Serious? I'm down in the bay area and our summers aren't what most would consider "hot" (normally high 70s to low 80s every day). Anything in the high 80s or warmer is considered a "heat wave" and there are maybe only 10-15 days per year that break 90. I like warm weather, but not too warm, ie 70-80 is perfect for me, probably like the average Seattlite. Anything getting into the upper 80s is too hot for general comfort.

On bike-to-work-week we broke all kinds of records. I rode 56 miles r/t Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Thursday (bike to work day) peaked at 106 and I saw 102 on my ride home, at which point I actually felt my carbon shoes hot-spotting. At points I was riding into a headwind (riding into a hairdryer as someone called it).

Honestly, that was my first hot-weather riding and it was very easy to ride in. The airflow you get on a bike cools you so it doesn't feel warm at all. The only times I was uncomfortable was when I had to stop at a traffic light, and my body wanted to overheat. Once moving again, all felt great.

Only drawbacks were my eyes tended to dry out and I went thru water FAST (over a gallon in an hour and a half).

Sure, I'd prefer not to do it every day, but I didn't feel too warm at all while riding. 80-90 is cake if you're wearing decent gear that wicks your sweat.

It's interesting how much more comfortable it is to bike in high heat than it is to do.. anything else. I would have been seriously uncomfortable walking for 90 mins in the sun at 100+, hell, even standing still would have felt really hot. But biking was nice! :thumb:

I've only lived here since ~94 but I am always fond of our July 4th rituals, huddling around the grill for warmth.

Friday was my 6 yr old's school campout. That's him on the right.
