I just back in the office and couldn't help but notice a mountain bike u-locked to my buildings day care fence. Closer inspection revealed a 70 dollar Kryptonite U-lock locked across only the top tub of a $50 Roadmaster bicycle.

Maybe he has a far better bike at home that the U Lock was for primarily and he bought the Cheapo for commuting purposes, and since he already had the lock.......but it is funny. :D

I use a $60 lock on my conversion fixed gear, where the most expensive part is the new $40 hub I built the rear wheel around.

Nothing wrong with that, sounds like smart security (minus the top tube lock point) to me. They should do what I do, over secure a beater with two types of locks, junkify/crappify a beater frame with stickers/detritus, and then park next to a nice Cannondale or Gary Fisher that someone else commutes in on. His/her lock doesn't need to be the best, just better than the person's rig next to him/her.

I kinda do the same with my OnGaurd Pitbull and my dumpster find fixed Panic. Oh course, with the new rear wheel set up, I'm looking at about $300 for just the rear wheel. Guess what the lock goes thru?

Only what the bike is worth to you, but generally the security system shouldn't cost more than the asset it's protecting. I'm glad that the person at least locked it up, don't get me wrong. I saw that and thought 3000 dollar rims on a 500 dollar Geo.
