Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Looking for big cycling shoes

Has anyone found a source for cycling shoes for those with size 16-17 (US) feet?
I know Sidi has up to European 52s and those should work for me, but I'm hoping for some comparison shopping somewhere. Plus 240$ is quite a bit for a special purpose shoe. :notamused:
MTB or road shoes would be fine... in fact, MTB shoes are probably better.

There have been many threads on wide feet, but fewer on those of us with long feet. I've also noticed that cycling shoes seem to run weird for sizes. I wear a 50 Birkenstock sandal and a 17 shoe. A 50 shimano was equivalent to a 14.2.
Any suggestions?

I wear a 50 in cycling shoes (15ish US, could probably stand a 51.) and have a hard enough time. My most sincerest sympathies to you.

Side note: The internet has made it sooooo much easier to find specialty sizes for anything. I used to wear shoes until they literally fell off my feet because I dreaded shoe hunting. It's still not easy now, but it has certainly made life a bit easier.

Sidi's are worth the $240.00.

Especially since they are the only MFGR I know of that makes that size. I'm looking though.

I agree that Sidi makes great shoes. I had the luck of trying on some 51 size Sidi Genius 5s and they felt like comfy house slippers. Dang, my first adult bike cost about that much.

MisterE0: THe Internet sites are great for us big feet guys... oddball shoes is my favorite, but no cycling shoes yet.

On the up side, Keens now come in larger sizes. My local shoe salesman expects their bike sandal to become available next year up to my size, but I'm not holding my breath.

I too was encouraged by the idea of Keen sandals but I have read several places that they run very narrow. I really like their sandals but with the boats I have at the end of my legs I can't deal with anything that hints at narrow.

I have no idea on pricing though, but stock starts at $489.00 and custom goes up from there.

I wear a 15 in New Balance and a 16 in Nike. My Sidi's are a 51 Mega. In the winter I wear a thick sock and summer a thinner sock. Like Tom said, worth the money.

My Sidis have been through hell over the last 12 years and they've held up beautifully. Totally worth the cash.

Cheers for this thread - I'm a 16 US and have a pair of NorthWave 15's that I wear - but are just that little bit too small. (They were cheap though - so worth a crack to see if they fit)

I've searched and searched and all I've found in that size are the Sidi's and the Rocket 7's. I'd love to hear about it if you find anything else - because both are expensive.

And I hadn't seen the oddball site before - very cool.

Hope they ship to New Zealand.

I wear a 17 and have only been able to find the same shoes already listed here. Hopefully someone knows of other options and will post them.

Most stop at 48. Go to a LBS and try on the Sidi's. They are worth the money.

Not to reveal my ignorance, but what the heck is that sticking out of your right shoe? Is *that* the cleat for a clipless system I'm unfamiliar with?

The ordeal...

The ride is called 3 GAP and is located in the North GA Mountains. Last year I did it 17 times, the ride goes over 3 mountain passes (hence the name) and is one of the best road rides in the GA area. I broke my chain at the base of the first climb called Woody Gap, Wolf Pen and Neels Gap are the other two major climbs you have to endure. I was not happy about the fact that I broke my chain and really un-happy when I proceed to break my chain tools pin when I attempted to fix said chain on the side of the road. As I was on the side of the road dealing with the fact that I was alone and about 20 miles away from the car a couple in an SUV with bikes on top stopped to see if I needed any help. I told them I was done since my chain was FUBAR and they said “oh, that sucks” and drove off. As they drove away and left me stranded I lost my cool and kicked my steed and for some reason my “kick” had somehow flattened my tyre. I normally have good bike Karma and have gone out of my way to help total strangers that are in need but the fact that this couple who were biker savvy just drove off made me loose it big time. I did a bad thing by kicking my poor bike and now I not only had a broken chain I also had a flat to contend with. As it turns out the lady part of the couple saw me in the side view kicking my bike and made her other half turn around and see if I needed a ride back to my car. We loaded the bike on the truck and as I was in the back seat I noticed something sticking out of my shoe and that was when I took that picture. The reason why I had a flat after I kicked my bike was because I managed to kick the tire stem and it got lodged in my shoe from the impact! Thank God it did not go in my foot or I would have had another “issue” to deal with on the walk/coast back to the car but we all laughed and as it turns out they knew some of my teammates. After they dropped me off at my car I decided I was not giving up on doing this 3 Gap ride and went to the nearest bike shop bought a chain, fixed the flat and went back and completed the ride… the guys at the bike shop really got a kick out of the whole tire stem in the shoe thing and even let me use their stand and tools so I could replace my chain. When i got back on the ride I saw the couple who picked me up and gave them a wave followed by a huge smile.

Jynx suggested going to a LBS and trying on shoes! That just doesn't work in these sizes. It is a rare day indeed that a LBS would have a 50, 51, or 52 in stock. A very considerate shop might order a pair without asking you to commit, but my shops haven't. Mine can order them... and I am tempted. :)

If anyone knows of shops that tend to stock the full size line of Sidi shoes, that would be a great data point to add to this thread.

Oh, and yes, oddballshoes.com rocks!

This will not help much for the cycling shoes, but I have used zappos.com for awhile for all of my shoes. They have no charge for shipping both ways. So if you order a pair, and they don't fit, you just send them back and they send you another pair. Unfortunately, it looks like the only road cycling shoes that they carry are the Pearl Izumis in standard width.

I picked up a pair of size 51 Sidi genius 5's from competitive cyclist for $179 shipped

I just pulled the trigger on some Sidi Dominator (Size 52) from gear and cycling in Rogers, MN. gearandcycling.com
Prices went up yesterday :notamused:. No doubt caused by the demand for cycling equipment and the falling dollar. This is the second increase since I have been shopping for them.
I talked to a rep on Friday and with their 10% sale and free shipping, It was gonna be pretty good deal. Now, it's about at the previous list price. I sent them a note to see if they will honor yesterday's price, but I won't worry too much.

Now, gotta go look at pedals and cleats! I plan on going with the LBS for pedals, cleats, and adjustments.
