Dunlap TT Report
Davis, CA
June 1, 2008
The Dunlap TT was moved to a new course this year. It was a flat 31k loop with 6 turns (L-R-R-R- L-R). Several of the turns were monitored with law enforcement and 10-second penalties imposed for crossing lanes. The pavement was fair to good. I had a good warm up on the trainer and chatted with BF folks and WebCor team mates. I competed with the W Cat 3/4 group (there were only 2 women’s categories: W Pro 1/2 and W 3/4), so we has women ranging in age from 20 – 59 years in the same category. Happy to say that there were many very tough 50+ women competing in the field of 24 W Cat3/4s (see discussion below). My category followed the W Pro 1/2s with a 2 minute gap in between. I was first out in the W 3/4s at 11:44 AM with 30 second start times thereon. It was highly unlikely that I would close a two-minute gap, so one of my goals was – don’t get passed. The temperature was warm and pleasant and the winds were beginning to pick up. I opted to stay with the disk. I had a smooth start. I got out of the aerobars on the turns for better control. There were significant headwinds on the longest 5.5 mile stretch. I tried to keep my speed at 23 mph but it kept dropping down. After the next right turn, we had the cross winds to deal with. I got thrown a bit by a big gust. Finally, some tail winds – speed picks up but no time to cruise. I keep pushing hard – after the last right turn, there is 2.2 miles to the finish. I was able to approach my max heart rate at the end, so I think I executed my strategy fairly well – and could have pushed harder during the race. No one passed me and I finished in 50:01 (average speed 23 mph) – good enough for 8th place. Based on my performance the previous week at the Beat the Clock TT which has a 400 foot elevation gain over 9.7 miles, I do better against the competition on a slightly hillier TT course.
Interesting data for the 50+ forum:
The winning time in my category was 47:24 (a 50 year old); second place 48:06 (a 57 year old who holds the national TT record for 55-59 year old women); third place 48:54 (53 years old). Eight of the top 12 women were 50+! Ten of the bottom 12 women were under 50. The 50+ women rock!!
Hermes started over an hour later with the 55+ men – he had more wind to contend with. I was able to watch him cross the finish line looking strong. We had a nice get together with Red Rider and CGallagh and their teammates afterwards. Hermes and I are ready for the Northern California District TT championships in Sattley this Sunday (June 8) – I am doing the women’s 20k individual TT and then Hermes and I are doing the 40k on the tandem.
