Great Lakes - RAIN Update

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

will be arriving in the AM from Indianapolis. What time should I arrive to allow for adequate time to get my packet and be ready to roll? Should I leave most of the packet stuff with my driver? (She will be heading back to Indianapolis)..When will I receive the jersey that I ordered?

The other issue is the starting placement in the pack. I want to roll around 16/17/18 the whole way. Should I place myself in the back of the pack and hope to run into a group that will be doing this speed? I am coming by myself so I don't have any sort of crew that I have established to ride with.
Thanks,
Alex

Sorry to break up the post.. for some reason it wouldn't let me reply with any sort of lengthy statement.
maxlstylee - you want to be ready and at the start line by 6:30am. ready as in ready to ride. the ride starts fast. with a 1000 riders rolling out groups form and you really fly without over extending yourself.
we started 15 to 20 rows from the front last year. it was the perfect spot and i expect we do the same tomorrow. look for us. the BFNIC jersey (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=348938&highlight=jersey)should be well represented.

Wow. I'm lined up next to Shider in that photo. Talk about ambitious.
Have fun out there this year, everyone!

Are you carrying a full day's worth, or is someone SAG'ing for you? !
We have SAG, so I don't have to carry it all from the start.
I got a new helmet, which is very comfortable and fits great. A friend of mine recommended it a "Uvex"
Also got some new sunglasses. Got the thumbs up from my son who said "Those are cool"....of course he had too add "Too cool for you, Mom"
Got some Oreos for the SAG wagon.
Roasted up some coffee as a gift for the drivers. Gotta be good to those kind folks!
Now I am wishing I had replaced my tires, which are looking a little ragged in places.
c'est la vie!
godspeed!

For all those that made it through RAIN today - fantastic job and perserverance. The weather today was about as crappy as it can be for a long day's ride. Strong rains to start followed by hot, muggy afternoon. I was looking to get out early myself today until we saw the radar at what was coming to Indy (and already raining on the RAIN riders) and it was moving really slow. Then later after working inside instead, I went out and was punched by the humidity and just thought, "Glad I'm not trying to ride RAIN." Good job!

Total 163miles (i missed a turn in my delirious state and had to turn back after I finally realized no markings or other rider on the road after 1.5miles)
Ride time: 8h29m29s
I'm too tired to elaborate further. More tomorrow. But a big thanks go out to Mrs. Psimet for driving and SAGing and Psimet junior for keeping it real :D

There have been worse one's, but this one ranks up there.
I just got back
Don't think I am doing the TT.
Rain, flat, dehydration/cramps, poor fueling, extreme heat, today had it all.
Well....4 down. I don't know how many more of these I can do under the "normal" conditions. Last year obviously doesn't count.

Was pretty neat.. and awful at the same time. Around the lunch break I was ready for it to be finished. I didn't eat enough for the after lunch leg and I felt it right around the big hill that curved around. That was not too much fun at all. After dinner was fairly simple though. Cruisin around 18/19 for most of the time. I feel pretty sore today. My feet, hamstrings, butt are sore for sure.
Overall it was a great experience. Man it was a long way. I was fortunate enough to not have any flat tires as well. I had just purchased new tires a week earlier so I figured I would be ok.
The rain in the beginning of the race was beautiful. I wish it had sprinkled a little more during the day.
Thanks to everyone for coming out and making a memorable experience. It was pretty neat leaving every rest stop and always having someone to ride with (I came solo).
Take care,
Alex

This was my first time at RAIN. I'll definitely be back next year! Met a lot of great people. Special thanks to my wife for providing SAG support while trying to photograph the event! It was nice being able to have the specific food/drinks that I wanted, when I needed them.

I made it!
I did not reveal to my riding partners until the very last that the longest ride I had done this year was only 65 miles. I could barely admit it to myself. I felt woefully under-prepared.
My ride time was 9:57. Not sure about my clock time, but we rolled in at 7:30pm
I actually DID cry (it's ok, I'm a girl!) during the last 10 miles or so. Just a brief little burst of tears (no one saw me, at least I THINK no one saw me) when I realized I was actually going to do this thing.
I ran a marathon (just once) in the past and this effort felt just as grueling and the accomplishment just as sweet.
I was blessed to be riding w/very competent cyclists all along the way. Our SAG drivers were THE absolute best. Those little refreshment stops really helped.
I thought the hardest part was the loop around Indy. I was really suffering, but pressed on.
I'm terribly sleep deprived right now. I got home around 2:30 am, and was up and at 'em for church this morning.
Looking forward to reading more ride reports.
God bless you all, especially those who rode, cherish your accomplishment!

well i didn't ride, but i live on the southside of indy off of banta rd. and decided to come out and watch some of you go by. one person flatted right by my house... so i gave out a tube and brought my pump for support (easier than their co2 cartridges). helped someone get back on the road fairly quickly. nj everyone! i had a 5k to run that morning and a mile race in ohio to run that evening... unfortunately no time for biking :(
