I have a 1990 Mongoose IBOC pro which is well equipped with Shimano DX derailleurs, Panaracer tires and gripshift shifters. I have recently bought a new MTB and want to sell this one, but I have no idea how much to ask for it. Any suggestions? Thanks

If the frame is steel, then i would offer maybe $350, its a very old bike now, and that may be a reasonable price to start with... If its aluminium, you have very little chance of selling it because the stress on the welds are supposed to last about 5 years, anyone that knows enough about bikes would know that if your bike is aluminuim and old, the frame is probably unfit to be ridden...

the 5yr life of aluminum is a rumor/information, not a fact.

I have an 11 year old alum frame, still going strong.

it all depends on how hard you ride :)

well said my friend. Some people are used to judging 2004 alloys based on experience with a 1990's alluminum frame...which is absurd. Anyhow since alluminum is the material of choice for many high tech high stress applications i guess it does the job on mountain bikes as well.... without any special expiry date.

Unlike a vintage Corvette however, their value falls quite quickly, especially in the 10-15 yr. range. New hardtails can be had for $300-$400, and come equipped with some Deore components sometimes. Your best bet would be to list it on eBAY. I've doubled my money on there with some bike tires, and other stuff. I even bought my last DH bike on there last year. $1800 K2 only cost me $650. It was used, but barely scratched! To hell with the local bike shops. I'll never get ripped-off by them.... I'd put a reserve price @ around $150, and consider myself lucky if I got much more than that for your bike. That's my opinion, and you know the saying....
