Mountain Biking - For those who wear MTB baggy shorts...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Underneath, do you wear just a liner short w/ chamois or an actual bike short w/ chamois?

Most baggy mountain bike shorts have a built in liner with padding (chamois).

I guess for the ones that don't have a liner, would you buy a liner or bike short?

I have a couple pairs of baggies with lycra built in.

For the others, yes, I just wear a pair of lycra shorts underneath.

My trail riding baggies (Fox) have a built-in chamois liner; for my downhill shorts, I wear a pair of thinly padded REI cycling briefs.

I have something very similar. Cannondale branded, padded undershorts. I usually wear mess shorts over them.

I detest "baggies" with built in liners. I wear bib shorts with a full chamois underneath [usually] synthetic shorts. The bibs give me a perfect fit, stay in place no matter what, and I can wear whatever outer short I want. I have actually found climbing shorts to work well on the bike. Prana and Sickel make some basic shorts with gussets and stretch panels that work perfectly for cycling.

Agreed on the liners. The built-in liners are very poor quality. I wear either normal lycra shorts, tri shorts or synthetic boxers under baggies (I don't need padding, so am fine with boxers and tri shorts).

I have a pair of old shorts I use that are made out of that really light material, so I bought Base layer Oakley shorts and just wear em both

just a question... if you are wearing lycra under your baggy shorts, why bother with the baggy shorts at all?

Then don't look at yourself in the mirror. :) Seems like wearing lycra is one of those "not my problem" kinda things.

Never been hit on by men in the woods. Maybe I'm not good looking enough. But if my wife catches me with the lycra on getting ready for a ride it usually delays my leaving the house. Luckily I'm only the world's slowest CYCLIST so I can get that particular job done very quickly. :)

There are some people who should not be seen in lycra. Any time. Anywhere. Myself included.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool lycra wearer, probably a hold- over from all the racing I used to do. I also like the bib version with the newer type of sculpted chamois. If you like the lycra persuasion, don't buy the cheap crap. Good stuff (Santini, Assos, etc.) starts around $80 and goes up from there, it's worth it, just ask your ass and privates.

If you can't handle looking at me in this stuff, either move around and ride in front of me, or avert your eyes.

One reason I'm not attracted to baggies is that I really hate getting snagged up on my saddle by loose clothing.

M_S
06-06-08, 04:02 PM
Santini is good?

The Jersey I have by them is crap. Zipper fell apart in about 5 different ways.

I wear lycra for longer/faster rides but sometimes wear baggies for the more causal stuff.

i wear lycra in the woods. It's the stuff I have from riding on the road. Until I tear holes in it, then I'll buy some shorts to put over the top.

I had my issues w/ wearing lycra for the longest time on the road, but everyone else did so I got over it. Now I don't even give it a second thought (except for on threads like this). I guess if more mtn bikers wore it, then.....more mtn bikers would wear it. I probably wouldn't be wearing it if everyone i ride with didn't.

my "good" lycra ($80 and up) bibs go with the rod biking and my cheap ($40 or less) shorts go with mtbing. The cheap shorts work fine with my fairly large gel seat, but the good bibs are worth it on the tiny road seat.

I put shorts on (nice thin under armor ones) over the lycra in the woods, and about 50% of the time on the road. It just depends how much crap you want to take (honking and swerving etc.)

Dunno, I think the ones in my Cannondale shorts are darned nice. They're detachable though.

Baggies with liners inside to me, don't fit well, too loose. I wear lycra/chamois underneath and whatever shorts I want over top.

Just wearing lycra alone to ride? Uhm, no.

Keep the trails man-toe free. Throw a pair of baggies over that thing.

I like the Santini BIBS that I have.

May be time to try out the baggies. At least then, someone riding behind me won't get nauseous.

I wear lycra no matter where I am riding, I have no shame. I don't like looking at myself in the mirror when I am wearing it either, but whatever...... I'm fat, and I got over that a long time ago.

It's all personal preference. On the trail, I'll either go boxers and shorts or mtb baggies with the built in liners.

For my I kind of like the Pearl Izumi baggies, versatile outer shell, covers the knees really well and doesn't snag. Unfortunately the ones I like are a bit on the pricey side of the spectrum.

I get my baggies caught on my saddle at all the worst times. Besides, I look good in lycra.

Some of all. Baggies with built in liners, baggies with removable liners, and some tights. Best is the tights and removable setup; grab some inners and wear whatever the hell outers I want with them. Mix and match depending on what the weather is doing, too.

I like these:

buy the separates, and wear them with whatever shorts you like. Bike specific outers or not.

I am not the least bit embarrassed by lycra, and it's far, far more comfortable so that's what I wear. I went through a period a long time ago (early teen years) where I was a big fan of baggies for self-image reasons. But I got over that foolishness long ago.

Plus, as Glynis said, I look damn good in lycra ;)

I don't wear anything. Well, anything specifically made for MTBing that is. I've got plenty of "athletic" shorts that'll work great. Took a few tries to determine which were best suited but I've really got it down to a science. Took a few years, but oh so worth it. I personally don't understand what the objection to lycra is. If you see sonething you don't like, don't look again. People are out there that are not pleasing to my paticular eye. I'm often forced to have them come across my field of vision. I blame my eyes that work the way they should. What I do in these situations is not purposefully look at this person again. Or if forced to by random circumstances, I get on with my life. It's not like I'm witnesssing small children being butchered for sport. Who really cares? It's the same as going to a crowded beach. Eye poison far and wide.

Personally, the chamois that come in the liners of most baggy shorts are pathetic to some of the road lycra stuff. I usually role a pair of oakley baggies or fox baggies with the liner cut out with my Pearl Izumi microsensor short or my new favorite the Sugoi RS short. Buts thats just me.

just making sure you understand you are not suppose to wear anything under your lycra,

If the material is not touching your body directly it cannot do its job and move the moisture away from you.

I was working in Colorado Springs for about 6 months last year. One day while hiking up the Barr Trail to Pike's Peak some dude in full team kit passed me! This was going up the Barr Trail! In case no one's familiar with this trail it's a pretty challenging hike - steep and technical switchbacks. What's next - biking up the incline! :)
