View Full Version : Where can I actually BUY a Butt Buddy?

I want to stock them on Velo Chocolate, but I can't get any answer out of Sidetrak. So I thought, at least while I'm doing that, I'll buy one, try it for myself (my Mini seatpost is too short). What do you know, I can't get it from their site! Any ideas?

I had all that trouble myself, but a week or two later the guy returned my phone call, took my order, and it arrived only days later. Another week or two later, after I'd installed it and had been using it for a while, the guy called again, said he'd got my phone call, did I want to order something? I guess he hadn't deleted the message.
I can't remember whether I tried to email them; at any rate I did not get any email response from them.
Sam, if you don't want to make the transatlantic call, send me a PM, I'll gladly make the call for you. Rudi
Have you tried Ann Summers... sounds like something they might stock ;)

No worries - I've got a good international package Rudi. I'll try again today. @PDR - you're confusing that with the BumChum and the ArseAssistant, both available from your local Ann Summers.....

Yeah, yeah. The guy I talked to at Sidetrak is very helpful and friendly, but English is not his first language... Sammy, when you talk to him, are you going to raise the issue of the name? I wouldn't know how to explain it. On the other hand, maybe there's some publicity to be gained by being the, uh, butt of so many jokes.

I'm not gonna raise it. If I stock them, I might simply call them something else. You're right though, it's nice an memorable....

Great idea, I'll get an extra-long thudbuster, shim it up to 30.4 and add two or three Butt Buddies, and I'll be ready to go. It'll cost over $200, and look terrible, but it'll be worth it!
(Oops, sorry, what's the right smiley for sarcasm?)

Dynocoaster, I'm not after this for the suspension aspect, but for the added height. My Mini's seatpost is about 3/4 inch too short for me. Even for suspension though, it'd be a lot cheaper than a Thudbuster, and with my sprung Brooks too, the Butt Buddy is probably as good.

They took several weeks to answer my e-mail and phone call. But they did eventually respond and deliver the goods.
RHM, how good is the ButtBuddy?

Makes you wonder how some of these companies make a living? The number of wholesalers and manufacturers where I've used their online contact system to say "Hi, I'd like to buy a load of your stuff, and sell it on please", and never hear anything back astonishes me. It's a very amateurish industry, in large part, and wholesalers seem particularly complacent.

Is it well made? Yes, it's a pretty solid item, I'm satisfied with the quality.
Is it any good as a suspension device? I can't really tell you, simply because of how I use it: I use it on my Downtube Mini, which has rear suspension anyway, and my seatpost is extended to 13", which makes it a bit springy anyway. I use it for the purpose of extra height (2" exactly), which it provides admirably.
Thanks for the report.
Can the B-Buddy be mounted on a rail seatpost, such as a lightweight Kore, perhaps with a lightweight adapter?

I think yes ... although I have not heard the term "rail seatpost". The Butt Buddy is compatible with any standard seatpost that mounts saddle with rails.
For instance, you can put a butt buddy on a Thompson Elite seatpost.
I meant to say an I-Beam rail, a single wide rail in the center, rather than the standard/common 2 rails.
Kore uses the I-Beam, maybe others also.

Here's a conventional rail "Rido" saddle mounted via an adapter to a Kore I-beam post.
HTH.
Thanks John, that is an excellent solution. It appears that this adapter replaces the I-beam. Looks very lightweight.
I live in the USA. Where would I get this adapter?

It is fairly light, yes.

& probably get a dealer list from that site?
I bought mine from a UK supplier.

Butt Buddies are now showing up on on eBay. This is probably easier than trying to get one from Sidetrak.
I have no affiliation with this seller other than having bought a stem from them a while back.

Dynocoaster is sending me his. I never got hold of Sidetrak, but I didn't try that hard. If it seems really good when I try it on my own Mini, I'll think about trying again.

Oddly, with the suspension and my sprung Brooks, posterior comfort is not an issue. Knee and thigh comfort is. Give me two more inches of seatpost, or give me DEATH!!!

My Butt Buddy has arrived, and I fitted it to me Mini. Total transformation! I can now get proper extension on my legs, and it feels like I'm 3-4 mph faster. Certainly on my quick trial run, I'm a gear or two higher everywhere and still perfectly (more in fact) comfortable in my legs. Wonderful! The suspension effect is a bit weird - it sort of tilts backwards - but not really unsettling. I'm glad, however, that I took this opportunity to switch back to the original saddle. I need the sprung Brooks for my Raleigh 20, and I suspect the combination of the Butt Buddy and the springs would've been disconcerting. Thanks Dynocoaster!

Oh hell yes! Actually, when I was in London on Tuesday I was the fastest thing on the embankment even without it (though the competition was not that tough). I've been frustrated by my inability to seriously harry the carbon and lycra crew on the Mini. That, I suspect, will be a problem no more....

I hope you are not at min-insertion on that seatpost (if it's stock)... you've added quite a bit of lever .. and moved your weight even further back from the bike's centerline... routine inspections for cracks or bends might be in order.. or a custom seatpost considered.
Sammyboy
08-02-08, 02:32 PM
I am at min insertion, and over the weight limit. Consider me a test of whether min insertion is about leverage, or amount of seatpost left in the frame. I'm doing regular checks, and I might consider a telescoping seatpost.
Looking at your seat tube it appears to narrow near the top. Mine is parallel all the way. Is this narrowing on the inside as well? If so, I wonder why this was done... it would constitute a serious weakening as only the narrow part would have the seatpost levering against it. Better check this immediately.

It doesn't appear that way to me. I think what you're seeing as narrowing is just the way the light is catching it.

I had a look at some other pics and that narrowing is clearly there, a little step just below the seat clamp. On one of the Naked Bike Ride pics the step is clearly visible in sillouette.

You're right Jur. Could this be why Downtube has gone to a bigger seatpost this year? Or have I got that wrong?
Is it narrowing on the inside as well?
Sammyboy

I'll check that later on.
