Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My fiancee was talking with a young kid she knows (and by young kid, I mean someone just out of college with an MBA or some such). The kid is pretty full of himself, unfortunately - all kinds of talk about how nobody is going to tell him what kind of car to drive, and he doesn't care what gas prices go to.

The bit that was interesting was that he lives near a MUP - the WO&D, in fact, and his latest rant was about bicycles on the roads. It sounds like this kid is being a real dick and harassing cyclists (threatening to run them off the road - that kind of thing). The kid was complaining because he thought the bicycles all belong on the MUP, and that the bicycles were riding on the incorrect side of the road (the bikes were in fact riding with traffic). Fortunately my fiancee was well-prepared, and explained how bicycles are vehicles and are subject to the same rules, and how dog walkers and pedestrians clog up the MUPs at some points. Then she told him about how if gas prices go up high enough that he too will be riding a bicycle. The kid started in with all of the usual excuses, and then my fiancee started to tell him about my 37 mile RT to the office :D.

The harassment of cyclists thing is sticking in my mind though. I need to get her to warn him that if a cop sees him do this sort of crap, that he will get pulled over. In some places the cops don't care that much about the cyclists but Arlington and Falls Church would probably take it more seriously. I told her to pass along this little message the next time she sees him.

And if anyone is harassed near Shreve Rd by an older Infinity - I may be able to help you ID the driver :notamused:. Not sure about the color of the car - I could ask..

Glad I haven't run into this kid yet. I have had some issues on Park st as I am crossing at the stop sign on the way to the MUP but nothing too bad.

Heh. I go the opposite direction. To Reston via WO&D, and then south on the Fairfax County Pkwy to the office.

That kid's attitude is boring and tiresome. Mr. Tough Guy.

Boring!

We always seem to assume that the kids will be a little more advanced than the parents. This kid's attitudes are back in the '50s. It's always a shock to see people going backwards. And worse when they are proud of it.

In all my talks with motorists, I've found that if they need to be told that bicycles are vehicles, they will never understand it when you tell them. They refuse to believe.

I've adopted a policy where if I get this crap from someone - conversation over. Too bad for you if you needed me to watch your dog, expected an invitation to stay with us in Wine Country, wanted a reference for a job, etc... I approach those who show an anti-cyclist bias the same as I would approach someone making openly rascist comments. Ostracism. It's a bit more difficult at the office but with the numbers here that ride into work, it's pretty obvious such commentary will not help your career.
