Texas - North Texas Wind

So-Has anyone been riding the last few days? This is just crazy!!

I haven't ridden since a 50mile to Italy and return Sunday. It was windy enough then - 25 miles into the wind and 25 with it. Since then I am waiting for the calmer air. It's way worse now. I dunno maybe I'll ride to work today - it's easier through neighborhoods.

MY commute is North in the morning and South in the evening. Yesterday the PM wind knocked a solid 10 mph off my morning speed.

Sunday afternoon, I went for a ride and was amazingly fit on the northbound part, and then came cranking back into the wind at about 10 mph southbound. But out at Rowlett Creek Presereve, it is very still and hot out amonst the trees.

Yep, it's tough coming home into the gale forces. Been turning in some TT times on the way in though!! ;^)

If you let the wind scare you off, you won't get to ride much around here.

Tuesday night I raced the Plano crit; and surprisingly the pack stayed together. I think the heat just sucked the gumption out of everyone.

Last night I went to White Rock (from my place in Richardson) so I got to break the wind up into short stretches, which I treat as hills - stand, upshift, stomp until you turn or get to a wind break.

On the weekends we generally go North, which means headwind all the way back. Just settle in, get low, spin and focus on good form.

Yeah, it's been brutal of late. Sustained winds in the 30mph range...that's crazy even for N. Texas. Not so bad though when you've got a buddy along for the ride; the tough thing is doing those days solo. :(

I did a few short rides all week just like normal, but went for 40 miles today before work. Headed south for the first half I was struggling to keep a 12mph average. Got to coast back to work though!

I've still been making my commutes from Casa View to Irving. Most of the ride is east to west and vice versa, so the wind hasn't completely beat me down. However, it has definitely been more challenging.

It's crazy in Central Texas, too. I had a 20-30mph headwind on the ride to work, but I was loving it on the way home! :)

I think riding into the wind was one of the top ten reasons that I moved to SoCal 25 years ago....riding north on Preston Rd in Dallas at 13 mph up to 544, turn around and ride 30 mph back to LBJ....almost like motor-pacing

Hmm, maybe I'll get on the bike and head towards OK - then call for a sag to get me home. Should be able to hit a fairly respectable average.

I hope the winds decline for the weekend as the weather-liars are currently claiming. Never thought I'd be calling 15mph winds "not that bad".

Somehow the wind wound up being in my face both ways to and from work yesterday. On my first commute, no less. My legs are definitely feeling it today. I work in Addison and have a lunch meeting on loop 12, so I have to take the car today which gives me some recovery time.

Worst part yesterday was when I had got home - the combination of wind and heat drained my pool a bit quick and I spent the next two hours filling it and re-priming the &*()! pump. The wind also left lots of gifts in the bottom of the pool which haven't been cleaned because the pump has been running dry, so out came the skimmer.

Hopefully next week calms down.

I'm thinking a route that is entirely East/West is starting to sound really good these days. Of course plan B is to have someone drive me South and ride back:D

I've been so busy this week that the wind was the least of my reasons not to make it out on the bike. However I must get out around the neighborhood a bit tonight to get the new Gazelle set to go for Sunday. So wind or not, I shall ride tonight!

Very well said!!! Just put it in a comfortable gear, spin, and work on form. I find that so many people guage their ride quality from AVG MPH so riding at 12MPH into a headwind will totally ruin that number.

It was a little windy this afternoon but I think it was better than yesterday.

I don't mind the wind so much (although I do like to whinge and moan about it),
but the 45+mph gusts are downright scary (cross winds).

I was out at Rowlett Creek Preserve again on the unicycle this evening about 7:30 or so. Among the trees, I could not feel a breath of air moving, couldn't see a leaf moving anywhere- dead calm. And hot. And humid. Whew. I coulda wrung sweat out of my t-shirt and I was only there maybe 45 minutes.

I'm pretty sure at one point today while heading South on 1378 from Lucus, I acutally may have been going backwards. If not, I was almost stationary.:backpedal:

I've decided my idea of heaven is flat, smooth, 75 degrees, and no wind........

I don't get quite that far west.
My office is at Beltline & Royal. I go across WRL on Mockingbird, cut over through The Village and get on Park Ln. Once I get past I-35, I hop on Royal for the rest of the ride.

i had to use my granny gear to go down hill yesterday.

I had to ride the brakes going downhill so I didn't blow back up.

Man today the wind slowed me down 6 mph on average from yesterday on my ride to work. It was really blowing but the ride home should be a little swifter since it is straight back north!

I've been enjoying this break in the grinding wind, the last few days. Yesterday was a treat.

The wind hates me, but that's ok. I hate it too.
