Northeast - unboxed bikes on Amtrak?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Does anyone know the current Amtrak policy for unboxed bikes on the Adirondack and the Vermonter routes? I have taken my bike unboxed in the baggage car on the Adirondack route before, but not in the past few years, and I have heard that the policy has changed. It was so much easier than boxing the bike that it is likely to make the difference between whether I ride or not.
The Amtrak website has general information about bike shipping, boxed and unboxed, but doesn't specify routes.
Thanks for any info.

Not allowed on either. In fact, you may not be able to take the bike even boxed, unless you are going between stations that have checked-luggage facilities.
I was just researching the same question in the past couple of weeks. Check out this thread:

I have got to believe there is some advocacy group out there nudging Amtrak to allow bikes on board.

There are several groups in Maryland that are doing that but then the Feds have to mess everything up by cutting back funding to Amtrack so they can build more roads because Americans are driving less and taking the train more. :notamused:
