Well, I've done 2 real winter off-road rides thus far, and I'm loving it! This is my first winter for riding, and there's genuinely something special about the silence, and crisp air that you just don't get with the other 3 seasons. Anywho, I’ll attach a few pix, as we all love pictures!

Winter and a single-speed - does it get any better?

Looks beautiful. Thats just a funride path though, or is it your commuting route too? If I could have such an idealic path as that, I'd rave too, though it would probably get tiring fast commuting it everyday.Till then, I'll keep going through the slush and ice of the urban roadways here in Harrisburg, PA. Where are you in Pennsylvania, bac?

Very cool pics bac,
I wish I could ride the trails here but I still have at least 20"+ on the trails here. Maybe this weeks warm spell will help.

Hi Franklen. I'm from SWPA, just south of Pittsburgh. The section of trail that I show in these pictures is a sweet spot between some railroad tracks, and a creek. The land is owned by the railroad, so I guess I'm poaching it. However, it cuts off a large section of crowded urban riding, and as you can see - nobody ever uses it. Man, it's great with a fresh coating of snow! Here's another pic from said section:

I'm originally from SWPA too, near Uniontown/Brownsville in Fayette County. My dad's been a railroad man his whole life, so I'll tell him to keep an eye out for ya. You've inspired me to more closely check out the rail lines that run along the Susquehanna here. I've gone down to them over the past year to view the river (I've only lived here for this past year), but have yet to walk them to see where they come out nearer to town. It's quite possible that I could use them occassionaly for cutting off a portion of my road ride into town.

Hey, I'm 30 minutes from Uniontown! Now get out there and enjoy the white stuff. It looks like we may get a fresh coating for Christmas! :D

I have a good friend that has been involved as a volunteer presenter for "Operations Lifesaver" for many years. I am sure he would want me to mention using CAUTION when riding near railroad right-of-ways. You may also be subject to trespassing charges if you are caught on their property. Around here the BNSF has aggressively posted NO TRESPASSING signs along the tracks. Their "Special Agents" (railroad security officers) are on patrol 24x7.

I'm just saying be careful, and be aware of the possible consequences.

I hear you, but trust me on this one. The section of urban riding that I'm avoiding is MUCH more dangerous to me than this off-road section by the water and tracks. ThanX for the heads-up, though! :)

I notice the bike looks like it is either a single speed or a fixie, what are you running there? How do you like the disks? Looks like a lot of fun. I may just have to do that on X-mas on the way into work. Then I can get two rides in the one to work and the one home, some night single track. Sounds like fun to me.

Yup, it's a Bianchi SISS single speed with Avid mechanical discs. Man, it's really bulletproof in the snow or mud. This bike has quickly turned into my most ridden and favorite bike. Here's a pic of here cleaned up sitting next to my hi-tech machine!

i saw the early model of that Bianchi when I was in Denver a couple years ago. It was a sweet ride, it didn't have the disc brakes. But it got me thinking of single speed, so I went home and converted an old IBCA. Loved that ride.
