Pacific Northwest - Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes - Camping?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm planning to ride the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes next month with a friend. He is not a regular rider so we will be taking it slow - very slow. We'd like to ride self-supported, camping along the way, but I'm having some difficulty finding information on camping along the trail. I did find one comment that said there were frequent camping opportunities, but no specifics. Are there campgrounds, or are there opportunities for free camping? If someone familiar with the trail could fill in the blanks, we'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

There is plenty of camping at Heyburn State Park and if I remember there was a camp ground on the lake in Harrison. I believe none of it is free but there should be plenty of opportunities for stealth camping since the trail runs through some rugged parts of Idaho. Did you go to the trail web site? http://friendsofcdatrails.org/ When you get to Mullan you need to hit the Hiawatha trail, it's well worth it.

Thanks, stealth camping is my favorite. :-) I've heard about the Hiawatha trail, sounds like a must ride. Yes I have been to the trail website but didn't see camping info there. Maybe I just missed it. The research continues....

Hi, There is a small campground in Pinehurst just on the trail edge of town. $20 a night. There is one not too far past Kellogg towards Mullan that didn't look too good right next to the trail. There is one right on the trail just west of Cataldo that looked ok. These all cater more to RVs but take tents. No showers. Heyburn is great. North of Harrison there is a chain of lakes where there are primitive sights used by fishermen.
