Folding Bikes - World Naked Bike Ride pics - nudity, but only bottoms, don't look if it'll offend you

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

No worries Tom - do what's best to do. The ads were there, just not very visible in the pics. They blew away before long once we started riding, but I talked to quite a few people before the ride. It's legal to be naked in England, more or less, but there are offences you could be prosecuted for if you rode down the high street on your own. The police aren't interested in hassling people on an event like this, however. It was such a great evening!

I don't agree. What's the point? Are you advocating the benefits of nude cycling? There are none. I see you didn't give up shoes. By your actions "normal" people are just encouraged to view cyclists as "nuts". Do what you want in your own time/space, but when you live in a society you have to take into consideration other peoples feelings.

Well you would have a point say re. kids seeing naked cyclists pass by but everything is relative isn't it? You can't pontificate about what is acceptable in society and naked bike rides when you still have the death penalty in Texas..............

You don't agree with what? The point is twofold; firstly to draw attention to the benefits of cycling over driving, and second, to promote body acceptance. It accomplishes both. The nudity makes people notice the "protest" more, makes them much happier and more positive about it than about Critical Mass for instance, and also gets away from the idea that everyone should be perfect. The UK is, thank God, not as hung up as the States about nudity, and we got almost 100% waving, honking, laughing, cheering, high 5's etc. A few people looked away, or looked grumpy, but in a democratic society 95% of the people don't have to go along with what the other 5% think all the time. The main reason for doing this is that it was FUN, and it lightened lots of people's days no end, both those on the ride, and those who we passed. It was like a moment of naked carnival. The time (6:30 pm on a Friday) was chosen specifically so there would be a minimum of kids out, not because seeing a naked person harms a child at all, but because people tend to be more sensitive about it when there are kids around. In practise, the people that we saw with kids were laughing with them, and taking it all in the sense of fun in which it was intended.
I don't think anyone reads very much into the psyches of cyclists in general from this, and if they did, then judging by the reactions we got, they may have changed their minds from thinking of us as moving roadblocks to fun people. Throughout the entire ride I didn't see or hear one complaint.

Take a look at these pictures of the crowd. This is how people responded. I picked these for their lack of naked content, but if you looked at all my 80 odd pictures, this is what you see. People were not upset - what's to be offended about in the human body?

But for some reason nekkid people makes them crazy. They're perfectly fine with dead people just so long as they are clothed.

It is nice to see how tolerant we are of all people as everyone has a right to their own views. This is the problem here in the USA if you dont see it my way then I an going to pull the hate card. We should all pull together and regardless who gets elected not let our great country get divided by this type of rhetoric and name calling.

I have to say that I don't object to people thinking "you shouldn't do this". It depends on the reason. You think it's morally wrong, or a bit unpleasant? Fine - I can cope with disagreement. I just won't take the "you can't go offending people like that" argument - people weren't, and if a few were, well there's no human right not to be offended. I've read the local newspaper report this morning - 100% supportive and positive. I'll post it when I can.
Below is the full photoset, but be aware these are the uncensored versions, and definitely Not Safe For Work. People who were glad not to "see it all", don't look at this.

No sure if this is directed at me or senseamp, and I do apologize for getting a bit hyperbolic in my response. After twenty some odd years of self righteous moralizing from folks like this, it seemed that it was time to look past their words and observe their actual behavior. He sure doesn't feel that everyone has a right to their own views, nor does he care that there may be people who are not offended by nudity. He is right and he knows The Truth and that's that. I have no problem with him not looking at the pics, though for some strange reason he felt compelled to despite being warned, and how he conducts his life is no concern of mine unless it impacts mine. However, I do get tired of these people going out of their way to tell me that there is something wrong with me because I don't think like they do, and they have been busy bending the law to try and force me to.
I just saw pictures of a bunch of people enjoying themselves and having a good time and he just saw dirty pictures, so I think I'll keep my version of reality, thank you very much.
Doesn't "divided by this type of rhetoric and name calling" pretty much define the last eight years?

Think you might be missing the point? Utterly? There's no "should". Either it's ok for everyone, or no-one. I presume this is directed at myself and my friend (Lady DowntubeDiva is not my wife, who couldn't ride this year since our son is only 4 months old), but this is not about giving people a lovely show for pleasure. On the contrary, it's about saying that EVERYone's body is ok, and that people should feel happier and more comfortable about them. And of course, your view is totally out of whack - if you look at those pictures, there's slim people, and big people, pretty people and ugly people. Just people, all in all. This same complaint gets levelled at nude beaches "It's never the people you want to see", as if people were somehow doing it for your pleasure.

Naked cyclists take to the streets

IT was one of the most revealing protests Southampton had ever seen.
Onlookers could not believe their eyes when 200 people stripped off for a naked cycle ride through the city to protest against the global dependency of oil and motor vehicles.
Wearing nothing more than a cycle helmet and a pair of trainers, scores of riders of all ages, shapes and sizes pedalled through the city centre last night leaving a trail of surprised and smiling people behind them.
In the second year the peaceful protest has come to Southampton, twice as many riders joined the nude event which also aims to demonstrate how vulnerable cyclists are when they travel on a busy road surrounded by other vehicles.
Drivers honked their horns in support as the cyclists, who had started from the eastern side of Southampton Common at Highfield, passed through Portswood.
By the time they reached the city centre, rounded the Bargate and headed up into Above Bar small crowds were waiting with their cameras ready to capture the revealing scenes.
advertisement
City centre shop workers finishing for the day and restaurant customers enjoying food and drink in the sunshine also stopped to cheer on the protestors.
Not all cyclists took to the hour-long ride completely naked with many choosing to join the protest in beach gear or underwear, while others chose to paint themselves the colours of their favourite animals.
Southampton organiser Rob Jordan said the ride was all about having fun while driving home a serious message.
"Its great fun to ride and everyone enjoys taking part in the event," he told the Daily Echo.
"We get a lot of smiles and a lot of cheers as we go round.
"We really just want to draw attention to the issues we are promoting about oil dependency and get more people to spend more time on their bikes and less time in their cars."
"Last year in Southampton we had 102 people take part and it looks like we have got a lot more than this year. These events just keep getting bigger and bigger."
The Southampton ride was the first leg of the World Naked Bike Ride in the UK this year. Others are taking place in London and Brighton over this weekend.
More than 2,000 people are expected to take part across the UK in seven cities during June.

Ain't folk hilarious?
In this society senseamp we don't get in a twist about a few people riding their bikes in the nude. We think it's funny, especially if they look like Sammyboy! (LOL).
A cople of years ago we had the phenomenon of the naked rambler. This geezer and his girlfriend set out to walk the length of the British Isles in the nude. The woman did some of the distance, but the guy walked the length of England, spending a very short time in the company of a narrow minded policeman somewhere in the south, but he was soon released and went on his way. However when he got to Scotland, he was arrested and jailed repeatedly, and each time he got out, he went right back to where he'd been snatched by the Scottish law, took his clothes off and carried on. Sadly, owing to the narrow minded bigotry of the Scotish police and the local Sheriffs, he spent months in chokey as the dour bretheren of the Kirk, couldn't get the though of having a naked man walking the hills of northern Britain through their narrow minded Calvinist heads. I expect they'd have arrested Adam and Eve as well unless their leaves covered them properly.

Naked rambler completes his trek
Gough and Melanie Roberts
Gough was arrested several times on his journey
Naked rambler Stephen Gough has completed his second trek from Lands End to John O'Groats.
Mr Gough and his partner Melanie Roberts, 34, from Bournemouth, reached the north coast of Caithness on Monday.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41357000/jpg/_41357098_rambler203.jpg
The ex-marine, who began his 874-mile trek in June, has been arrested and jailed on several occasions.
Mr Gough, from Eastleigh in Hampshire, said he wanted to challenge public attitudes to nudity. He celebrated his success by putting his clothes on.
Video cameras
Mr Gough, who first completed the trek in January 2004, did not rule out doing the journey again.
Speaking from a John O'Groats cafe, he said: "It's nice to get warmed up again.
"It has been pretty cold and the locals have been coming up to us offering us whisky and all sorts.
"They've been very, very friendly. We passed a school and there were even parents coming out with video cameras."
However, the naked pair had encountered problems earlier in their journey.
Mr Gough was jailed for two weeks in September for breach of the peace by walking naked on the A701 in Midlothian.
Cover up
He was arrested again moments after leaving Edinburgh's Saughton prison for refusing to cover up and was bailed.
And he was later jailed for two months at Dingwall Sheriff Court for breach of bail conditions and was sent back to Saughton to serve his sentence.
As he left jail in November, Mr Gough was again arrested for refusing to cover up.
Last month, he was admonished by a sheriff for breaching bail conditions by failing to wear clothes as he left prison.
The pair were picked up by police near Dingwall after an outraged Kirk minister spotted them and complained about their nakedness.
And they were arrested again as they neared Dornoch Bridge in the Highlands.

My dog walks about with a bare arse all the time. Nobody even turns a hair, not even when she takes a crap in the street - at least not as long as I clean up after her. It takes a certain confidence to walk around with your arse on view - dogs have it, Sammyboy and his friend, I don't know. Maybe those grins say they are't quite used to it yet.

I'm used to it, but more on the beach than on the High Street! Jo? That was her first time. She laughed all the way round. As we left the starting point, she said to me "You know what's weird? This doesn't seem weird". Then, when they stopped us on a busy street between two crowded pubs, to allow everyone to catch up, I said to her "Still don't feel weird?". She said "No, feels totally normal, but fun!". That shot that you reference, however, was right at the start, she'd had her dress of for about 2 mins, and wasn't completely at home with it yet! That was one I thought I could use for publicity purposes.....
