Winter Cycling - fattest snow tyres, and spiked reccomendations

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm going to be doing some heavy(very) touring on rock solid ice, and deep sinky snow, and was trying to find the best tyres for this. For ice i was looking at the freddies revenze DH (i cant find the downhill model anywhere, does anyone know of any alternatives, or are the lites/336SWs, still ok?) due to its toughness and longer spikes. For snow i was looking at the surly endomorphs(are there any fatter tyres out there, do they need special rims?) thanks. Bike specs (for rim and fork compatibility, plus pics) can be seen at www.steppebysteppe.com.au
thanks

I assume the super-wide tires like they use on a Pugsley won't fit on there?
And just curious- but right in front of the rear wheel is a pipe sticking out to the side- what does it do? Looks like it would hang up on stuff.

yeh they are a little too fat maybe, i'll check...the rear racks and mounting sections for gear haent been finished yet, so those two tubes sticking up at 30degree are actually the bottom of the rear racks :)

I use Nokian studded tires for ice, they are great, just like riding on pavement.
Here is a link to Speedway Cycles in Anchorage Alaska, USA. They are some pretty tough winter snow and ice riding guys and can give you all the information you need regarding tires and specs. They design snow bikes so they have an understanding of the stresses the big tires can put on your bike, send them an email. Interesting journey you are headed on, good luck!
