Fifty Plus (50+) - I must confess

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. View Full Version : I must confess

I suited up this morning and went out for my ride. Things felt really good, for some reason my attitude was high and I actually felt like I was a little stronger. Then I looked at myself - I was aghast. What would my 50+ BF friends say - they would drum me out, censor my posts, ridicule me, never let me live it down.

I was in full PerformanceBike Kit - right down to the gloves:eek:. Whole outfit probably cost me less than $50.

I know – call me a Poser or worse yet OCP and your probably right. Tomorrow I think I’ll go out in full BikeNashbar kit, I’ll save my EMS kit so I can turn the heads of the ladies on the club rides.

Please accept my humblest apologies.

Actually, I don't think that the source of the kit is what matters so much as that it's adequately goofy-looking to embarass your kids. Performance stuff will work - trust me.

I don't care what I wear when ride- None of the people I know will be out on the road so I don't mind looking "Goofy" to a bunch of strangers. Mind you- To wear matching performance clothing on a ride involving Other cycllists- You would deserve everything you got.

Yep! As time goes by, I get goofier and goofier. When I started riding, I declared myself to be in a "Spandex-Free-Zone". Then I bought shorts to wear under my hiking shorts, plus a couple of jerseys. Then I got rid of the hiking shorts, and am riding in full lycra. Lately, since I've been riding for two to three hours at a time, I've been having a problem with "sunburn stripes" (a malady pretty much restricted to those of us that are too tall for our hair) so I bought a "Headsweats" dew-rag to wear under my helmet.

One benefit of the dew-rag is that I can pull it down over the tops of my ears to keep the sun off of them. Should make my dermatologist happy, as she says I have pre-cancerous cells on the tops of my ears, and am never supposed to be outside without a hat with a full brim. Otherwise I was going to have to start riding in a cowboy hat. But then if you wear the cowboy hat you've gotta wear the boots that go with it.......and that just won't work with the lycra shorts and jersey no matter how many times I try.

God! I think I'm Schizo-OCP!

And I thought the punishment would be riding the next 200 miles in cut offs (the blue jean type with the dangeling threads) and an oil stained holey teeshirt. Phew - I got off easy.

OK - here I am in full performance kit (Actually the jersey is nashbar as my yellow performance Jersey is in the wash). Notice the elastic on the legs is gone - 10 years of riding in these shorts. The bottom padding is just about gone as well, but these are one of my more comfortable shorts - sometimes less is more :).

$50!

My jersey and shorts usually total to $15-$20. Then add $2 for my socks.

Why is it that the guys get to look goofy in lycra, while I get whistled at? Wanna trade places for the summer, I'll take a couple months worth of goofiness, thank you!

If this was the Road Forum you could NEVER say Performance kit was faster than Campagnolo! That's what you usually wear, right?

I've got holes in my shorts older than that.

Be careful what you ask for in a kit/lycra thread. You know which pictures can show up and none of us want to see those again.

Does a low, mournful whistle as the person shakes his head from side to side.. count?

I stopped out at the beach this weekend for a short rest and to eat a Powerbar, dressed in the standard attire, and as I was getting back on the bike some 300 pounder looked at me and said, "Isn't that hot?" (He meant hot in the sense that it would make one warm to wear it, not that I looked hot in it, in the Paris Hilton-esque sense of the word.) "Not when you're going fast," I said.

The irony of the story is that I was in the parking area of the local nude beach at the time, and Shamu was on the way out there when he saw me. I suppose a cycling outfit is a bit warm, relatively speaking.

You shoulda said, "Not any hotter than that pork belly body suit you're wearing." :roflmao2:
