So today it's about 90F, and is supposed to be in the mid nineties for the next few days. I know that when it gets like this I just start sweating profusely and can't stop. I can barely function when it gets like this, so riding is limited to the cooler mornings and evenings. Anyone else deal with this? I guess since I'm already sweating, I should go out and ride anyway, I just don't feel like doing anything but drinking iced tea on days like today.:)

Nope, not a dripper! The heat will fatigue me but don't sweat noticeably. I was on a training ride once. I hit the first hill and thought I had a flat. Didn't so I rode back cause I thought I was sick. Found out a bit later it was a record hig 115!
Did this ride a few weeks ago. 40 miles of climbing. I stopped at a park to rest. I wa shocked I was sweating this much. Turns out it was 105 that day. But the heat doesn't stop me from riding. Only the rain cause I don't like to risk the components on the bike. I don't pay much attention to the weather report unless it looks like rain!:D

The hotter it is the better I like it. Today, on my regular 28 mile route, it was 105. I like...

What is wrong with sweating when working out? I love to sweat while working out. Its the sweating while in clothes and no one else is sweating that I dont like. As I have started riding in the hot weather I believe it is helping me not sweat as much in other venues. I say, sweat on brother! It surely has not stopped me from riding!

Same problem here in Florida but I refuse to stop riding, so I get out around 6:00am and finish by 8:30am. I see a lot of people at that time now that I usually saw in the afternoons.

100 degrees hear today! Did not ride because I had to work. Tomorrow is supposed to be about the same but I may ride early in the morning. I will not ride at 100 degrees!

You guys are killing me! I hate the heat, it always triggers a migraine. No matter how much I hydrate, if I have to go up a hill, a migraine awaits me at the end  .

Seattle's as close as I could manage. I would rather be wet in the winter, than boiling hot in the summer :thumb: .

I've never been...I don't think I'd care for all the grey and rain. Where I lived in Northern Indiana got an average of 71 days of sunshine per year...man that gets old. I forgot what a proper sunset looks like.

I can pump out gallons through my skin! I love the "performance materials" that get a lot of it away from me. Still have to clean it off my bikes, clothes, glasses and helmets. Been like this forever so I just ride, drip and drink.
I love the hot Texas weather. I sweat alot on my bike rides but I feel that this makes me more resistant to the heat when I work or hang with friends. At work,I'm an inspector and I do alot of walking as I inspect large properties. Property manager and workers often ask how I stay so fresh as they start to lag with the heat. Workers often walk fast to try and wear me out but I just effortlessly clip along behind them and halfway through inspections, it's me who rushes them to hurry up and then, I'm merciless. I tell them, "Let's go the the front of the property to look and the siding again." or "Let's go the rear property line to inspect the back fence." and the management crew is sweating bullets. :p

Okay, sweat is a natural process, as you sweat, the sweat evaporates off the skin, leaving the skin cooler, this means the body can circulate more blood to the skin, cooling the blood, and preventing the body from over heating. This works really well in places that are hot, dry and breezy. However if you have a hot and humid area, with little or no air motion, then sweat tends to build up on the skin, and you feel hotter, because sweat is less able to evaporate. Air motion is why you can be riding, and feel comfortable, but as soon as you stop, you feel much hotter, because your forward motion is causing more evaporation. Today here it was nearly 90℉, but because there was a stiff breeze, we had good evaporation, so it didn't feel hot. That's actually rare around here, most hot days it's still as can be, the humidity runs over 90% and you have no relief other then the A/C or sipping your ice tea under a nice old shade tree.
I sweat like a pig. I sometimes sweat my shoes wet. That's when it gets good.:giver: This time of year in East Tn. if you don't sweat you would die. I was out walking around this afternoon for about 30 min. There was not dry place on me. I have to get used to riding in the heat. I have a metric on July 5th. Starts Downtown it will most likely be 80* when we start. Ride-Sweat-Drink-Repeat.

Doing this at 92 degrees tomorrow, with 20-25 MPH winds from the SSW.
I know it's not as hot as it's down south but it was 31C (87f) today but last week it was 17C (62.6f), I hate the heat but it's usually not to bad after you get started, but I say the same thing when it -20C.

I think there's some pacific islands that may come close- seems like Guam is 80ish year round.

That's why I'm moving out there at the end of July. I've been in the midwest the first 23 years of my life and I love having all 4 seasons, but I'm sick and tired of the 18 inches of snow over a day or 2 the past couple of years and the strings of 90 degree days during the summer. Bring on the rain and temperate climate baby!:D

I figure that I create my own 15 to 20 mph breeze when I'm riding and with the polyester clothes that dry faster, I like riding in hot weather.
Now working in it (construction) is a differant story.
They will send us home from work because its too hot and I'll jump on my bike.

Guam is hot and humid. When my dad was alive, that is where he lived. It is too humid there. Try Hawaii...

I was thinking the same thing, if it's anything like Okinawa you can cut the humidity with a knife!
I cant really do a lot in the heat either. Im a total sweathog and have to really watch my water intake. Ill get a dehydration/heat headache in a split second if Im not careful.

Gotta love the midwest, its been averaging 90+ with heat indexes in the 100's and humidity to match.

East Hill, do you drink caffeine regularly? If you do, you may want to try giving it up and see if that has a positive impact on your headaches. It has worked for me. I still get them occasionally, but they are much less frequent and severe.
Living in San Antonio, it's hot and fairly humid from early May to mid October. On the weekends, I try to get on my bike before 7:00am. On weekdays, I'll try to wait until at least 6:30pm to get out there. It's still blistering, but by 7:00 it isn't so bad. I don't see so well at night, so I don't like to be out much past 8:30.

No, caffeine isn't one of my triggers. It's the heat + glare that does me in on the cycling when it's hot. I'm on citalopram to keep the serotonin levels even, and that has helped immensely, but I still get migraines every once in a while.
Usually it's unsuspected MSG, but there are other triggers as well.
East Hill
Caffeine isn't a trigger, it just makes me much more susceptible to the things that are (heat, allergies, dehydration, etc).

East Hill and others that have migraines? Have you tried seeing a chiropractor. A lot of people can be helped tremendously with migraines and other headaches by having their upper neck adjusted

My guess is that 130 pound stick poles have a greater aerobic/cardio capacity per pound of muscle and thus both produce less heat and can dissipate it more efficiently. I've learned the hard way to just slow down when it's over 85 (-1 mph for every degree over 85) as I can quickly generate more heat than any amount of sweating will remove.
StephenH
06-08-08, 07:26 PM
Now wait a minute there...-1 mph for ever degree over 85...that means at 100, I'm stopped or going backwards...
But actually, I've got a fair bit of muscle and insulation, so I can generate a lot of heat and it is hard to lose it. In the winter, that's good, in the summer, not so.
Look closely here, and you can see that my shirt is totally soaked...picture was taken about noon, and shirt has been sweat-soaked since about 7:00 that morning when I rode in to the ride.

Ooh, something I forgot about. A car with attractive women in it actually honked at me on this ride! Cool! Of course, they could have been honking at the young fit tan guy that had just passed me...

I'm terrible. I can't even stand outside for more than 15 minutes in the summers here and I look like someone dumped a bucket of water on me.
I've been here 9 years and I still haven't gotten used to it

I sweat a lot. A whole lot. More than normal people. I can drench a jersey on my 11 mile morning commute, and after a century I will need to wring out my socks.
When it's hot out, like the 90+ degrees we had for the TdC century last month, I use NUUN tablets and carry 2 large water bottles. I refill at every stop and pop in more electrolyte tablets.
On the TdC I went through about 12 bottles during the ride (filled up at each rest stop) and had plain water in 1 and Accelerade/NUUN in the other.
I rode 50 miles yesterday and it was in the low 90's with about 70% humidity. It wasn't too bad except for the few times I had to push it up a hill, I felt a little sick for a short time when I got to the top. I didn't drip sweat either but when I was stopped I did get sweaty. I took more breaks than normal and for the first time ever drained my 100oz Camelbak!
I'm not going to let the heat stop me from riding either, I just might not push myself as hard!
Now I just need to remember sunscreen as I'm a little red today.

Hey, that must be the 9:55!
So what else is there to say about it? Sweat is part of the body's process of thermoregulation. Past a certain very limited point, there isn't anything you can -- or should -- do to stop it.

I feel your pain. My brother lives in Missouri City. I don't know how you stand it. It's humid here, but not nearly as bad as down there.
