It was a red letter day of sorts for me.
It wasn't so much that I did 27 miles today and 2400 feet of climbing.
So what? 27 miles is just not that big a deal for me at this stage of the game.
It was the miles they were and how I handled them.
I had planned this ride for a while... A ride over the Guadalupe Canyon Parkway to the bayside of San Francisco (east), over to Geneva Ave and then across the city all the way to the ocean side (west) and then on home. I've traveled many of these roads before, some many times.
So, first I've got to take the second hardest climb out of town.
This just never gets easier -not much anyway- but I just take my time, stop when I need to stop (and that is now 2 or 3 times fewer than before) and eventually I get to the top.
Here's the first really steep section of note and even getting this far is no real joy.
The section after this is even longer and even worse.
But I say I like the pain, right?

Part of the reason, I guess, is a view like this -Mt Tamalpais, in this case- at the top of every climb.

After a nice long downhill run I reach Guadalupe Canyon Parkway. I've been here once before.
The worst of this is a 1.5 mile climb up to 700+ feet.

It hit me halfway up that the last I did this with a 39/27. Today, it was a 39/24.
No wonder it seemed harder this time up.
But, again, at the top, along with the satisfaction of making it is this view: Mt. Diablo.
Someday, Maybe I'll ride up that, who knows?

And then down, down, down hitting a top speed of 39.5 mph and over to Geneva.
Not terribly steep but into a stiff west wind almost the whole way.
This is the Cow Palace (duh). A huge pit of a barn. It hosts every event imaginable. The rodeo, indoor short track, dog shows, Jehovah's Witnesses conventions. Even concerts. The Beatles played here. I missed that one but I did see Wings. They want to tear this down. That would be a shame but it's old.

Before this, I passed by the Statue Factory.
Every lawn jockey, gnome, angel, unicorn, you-name-it, that you can think of, they sell.
Should have gotten a picture but the light turned green so off I went.
Finally I make it across town and take a ride around Lake Merced and the Harding/Fleming Golf Course.
A US Open was played here not too long ago.

The lake used to be an urban jewel but it's dying. There are plans to save it. I hope they do.
There's a nice -and well used- 5 mile MUP around Lake Merced. Mrs S and I have ridden it many times.
Sutro Tower. A TV and Radio broadcast tower. Most of it is just support, the antennae themselves sit on the very top. Its real claim to fame is that the tower is taller than the mountain it sits on. I hate it. Always have.
