Its pretty hilly in seattle, but its not bad. My neighbor gave me an old schwinn, and want to make it a single speed. I was wondering what other single/fixed gear riders what gear ratio are you riding?

My singlespeed commuter/errand bike is 42x17. Tops out pretty quickly on the flat stuff, but it's great for the climbs, and I can coast downhill.

I've run 44x17, 45x17, 46x17, and 48x18 fixed with good results. Tried 44x18 fixed on my old fixed commuter. It's too spinny on the descents.

44/17 or 44/16 is good. I can make it over anything aside from east capitol hill between 26th and 24th.

i haven't ridden my pista in a while, but it's geared at 14x40 - going up 10th ave to broadway is tough, but queen anne was my limit - i had to rest a few times doing that one.
