So I have a new bike vision. I have a Kona Cinder Cone for XC and a Kona Jake for commuting/road riding at the moment. Both bikes are great....however, I want something I can just get on and go. I've been looking at craigslist/ebay for a suitable bike, but there are few my size, and usually people want more money for them than I want to pay and they are in terrible shape.

Here are my thoughts for the bike's purpose/requirements:
1) Get on and go with zero prep/special clothing
2) Comfortable leaving locked up outside the store or at a train station
3) Inexpensive enough to not be too incredibly upset if it does get stolen
4) Simple and fun to ride
5) Rack mounts would be nice, though not essential (grocery panniers would be cool)
6) My Jake is a 62cm frame, this bike should be similar in size
7) I'd prefer a steel frame

This will be my errand bike and local cruiser. I'm thinking a single speed might be fun and simple. There aren't many hills around here, so it should be fine. Any SS has to have water bottle mounts, I know it looks cooler without, but whatever, I want it to be a comfy ride for me. The Motobecane Messenger fits the cheap profile, but I'm not sure it would hold up to my clyde specs (6'5, 315lbs). The one that really has my eye is the IRO Rob Roy. It's about $650, but looks like it fits all my other criteria. Anyone have any thoughts?

All of the above sound like any number of old Schwinn or similar cruisers off of Craigslist.

This is the real catch. Most of those cruisers were made in smaller sizes, as the main riders tend to be kids. So to get a larger frame, you have to switch to the road bikes or similar less-cheap bikes.

One other option is here:

Click on the "Pan Am Steel Frame" which is available in a 23" frame.
I've seen this web page, but have not dealt with the company, so I can't offer any opinion as to quality, etc. The Ultra Cruz and Ultra are also shown in larger frame sizes.

You might just want to pick up a Messenger from BD. If the wheels don't work out, you can budget the money you've saved toward a new wheel build and ebay what is left over.

Kona Smoke. They're great rides, and very cheap. Crazy versatile, as well. And and and, they don't have shocks or "bling" like that, so your average theif won't even look twice at it.

I was hot and heavy over the Kona smoke when I was bike shopping, but my Kona dealer couldn't get one quick enough for me. $349 here in NJ, looked like a great commuter to me.

I ended up with a Trek 7.2 FX, also a great low-ender.

Good suggestion on the Smoke, but I've looked at it and the Dew's and they just don't grab me. I dunno.

I just pulled the trigger on the Moto Messenger, we'll see how it holds up. They only had blue left in my color, but I suspect the color looks better in person than it does in their mugshot style photos. I think I'll give the Power Grip pedals a try as well. Now the impatient waiting begins. I'm getting my hopes up that I might have it by the weekend if they ship today, though I know that probably won't happen.

Nice -
I ride my SS/FG to work 13 mile round trip.
That bike looks really sharp in orange or red.

yea, i wanted the orange, but figured the 64 would be a bit tall for me, and would rather have the wrong color than the wrong fit. I plan on giving it a shot on my commute of 24mi rt. I wonder what the max tire size of it is...

edit: looks like it'll take pretty wide tires, I've got a spare set of 26's i'll toss on it for now.
