Recumbent - Would you pay 200 bucks for this?

I found this on craigslist, which looks to be a DIY recumbent for 200 bucks. Should I jump on this opportunity to get a bent for cheap, or stay away from this thing?

I'd pass. Way too short and with the rider right over the front wheel. Obviously not thunk through before building. Hit the brakes and it'll do an endo.

It's not a homemade bike!(took some research to find out it's a Hypercycle )with Wheelsnith rims. If you google Hypercycle you'll see it explained with pictures.It isn't easy for me to ride because its such a short wheel base.

I recognized the similarity, but didn't realize it was the real thing! Hypercycles were the first attempt at the 'modern era' recumbent. Generally regarded as poor-handling. I can see why! I don't even know if it's worth $200 as a collector's item.

I think it'd be worth that just in the parts.

Depends on if they're the original, 20-year-old parts, 27 inch rear wheel, etc. I can get parts of that vintage by buying a garage sale bike for $25.

Well, I wouldn't pay $200 for it, but I'd ride it once around the parking lot if you paid ME $200. It just looks plain SCARY, with that mega-short wheelbase and forward seat position.

I bought one for $20 bucks at a tag sale, at $200 its over priced. The parts its built up with (If there origanal) were steel rims, and old 6 speed freewheel, and poor brakes at best. But for 20 bucks I thought it would be fun to have around so I picked it up. maybe worth $200 if your a collector, but not as a everyday ride.


It was in the bike shop when we had the fire... and they looked at it and said,"Recumbent..those are expensive, $500 ok" Yea well...they offered first.

What you see is what you get! Handmade carbon fiber frame ... complete EXCEPT for back tire/rim & rear sprockets. 27" rim (???) needed, seat & neck adjustable ... built for land speed record! Body has been tossed out, sadly.

If anyone sees something like this and is considering it, IMHO the only "Safe" way to ride this would be with a large cinderblock mounted over the rear wheel :)

They attached logs to the back of the car to stabilize it for mountain driving; unfortunately, when the hit an outside turn, the weight pulled them off the road and down the mountain. Don't know if anyone lived through it.
