Hello !

I need to eventually get some form of bag on my bike to carry around [in the worst scenario] my gym stuff - meaning a couple of t-shirts, pants, towels, shoes and maybe a book or two. It's not that much space if put together properly, but what I wasn't aware of is that Disc brakes make it impossible to use normal mounts on the back wheel.

What other options do I have except the obvious backpack which I WOULD try to avoid given my back problems ?

You want the Topeak Explorer Rack with Disc Mounts (http://www.rei.com/product/735847). I built a disc-brake equipped mountain bike last year for use as a commuter and this rack works perfectly! You may also need some clamps (http://www.rei.com/product/700230) if your frame doesn't have the appropriate braze ons for mounting a rack. If you don't have much stuff to carry, you can also go with a seat post rack (http://www.rei.com/product/697096); most are limited to 15-20lbs.

A few Racks come with stand-offs now. I always snag them from units that don't need them to save for folks that DO have discs. Topeak, and Blackburn racks come with long screws and standoffs. to get around the Brake Caliper.
